This take is so mind-numbingly crayon-eating it has activated my autism.Positron said:
I am supposing that for this example, Bob is assuming a fish can talk and communicate with humans. If a fish isn't sentient/sapient, there is a question of whether or not it would know what 'water' is (as opposed to land/air), but let's assume for the moment that said fish IS sapient. If that's the case, then Bob is extremely exceptionally smooth-brained here. People are IN AIR, and we darn well know if the air changes (wind, bad smells, good smells, smoke, etc.) and if a fish asked a human, "How's the air up there?" the person would NOT reply with "What the FUCK is AIR?" Even if a fish ISN'T sapient, it would know darn well any changes in water (bad smells, good smells, prey smells, particulate chemicals that lead fish upstream, etc.) and would, even if it didn't have a word for the concept, ABSOLUTELY FUCKING KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATER AND AIR. The ONLY reason a fish would ask, "What the hell is WATER?" is if the fish had a different word for "water" and didn't know the human word for water.
This pseudo-intellectual bullshit about "fish don't know they're swimming IN FUCKING WATER" is about as smooth-galaxybrained as you can get. Thus it fucking fails as a metaphor for "people aren't aware of the culture they're in". Just because something is "default" (like, you know, a person BREATHING AIR), doesn't mean people don't know that you can't breathe without it or that you're unaware that it's there. Hell, there's been an awareness of it ever since people started fucking drowning in water.
BTW, I wonder if the TikTok disabled person has Tourette's Syndrome or something like epilepsy. That's the ONLY thing I can think of where someone might be offended and be all, "It goes against my beliefs for this person to be around me." (due to either constant swearing and potty mouth or seizure flailing that would make some people think it was something like Demonic Possession instead of a medical issue.) I can't think of any current religion where it's against the religion to be around people in like, wheelchairs, or blind, or whatever. And that's assuming this isn't a whole-ass Crippled Jussie Smollett situation.
