The revised drawing (hard to call it true to life) accents feminine curves without parodying them. The overall body proportions are adjusted to be a little more realistic-- a small shift to head and torso proportions imply there's more leg and match up better to human proportions. The clothes look comfortable rather than painted on. The facial proportions still need work, but overall, yeah, massive improvement over the V5 puppet.

I didn't see those 're-writing Harry Potter asks' before, somehow, but I went ahead and skimmed through them and it really kind of highlights Lily's priorities.

She says there are huge problems with the books but the only real issue she has seems to be a means for her to attack Rowling personally for her writing decisions. She also makes an insane leap that Rowling 'can't take criticism' and always has to 'one up' her critics, and instead of bringing up the insane Twitter answers (wizards just Vanished their excrement before internal plumbing existed!) she mentions that Rowling just had to address the Time Turner issue instead of ignoring it like a 'good writer' would.

Everybody who brings up inconsistencies or problems within the books as far as plotting or worldbuilding go, Lily just handwaves as 'I'd basically just keep it that way' and only cares about changing things like making Harry trans/Luna non-binary/Hermione black/Ron gay. And that any side characters she doesn't like would be replaced by her OCs, including making Aliana a teacher (interestingly, for anybody not bothering to read those, somebody asked what Aliana would teach but also said they hadn't read TSR and Lily ignores the question and just moans that soooo many people love Aliana but have never read TSR, woe is me).

She doesn't even want to acknowledge the obvious path of Transfiguration allowing true biological transitioning and instead goes to 'make it a potion so it's basically like HRT' (or High Guardian Spice).

I guess this is apparent with how she approached TSR, too. There's no actual consideration for the storyline or the world, just making all the characters minorities or queer or queer minorities while giving the lead character some kind of benefit that just eliminates all adversity (in this case, Harry is so obscenely rich that he buys his way out of all the problems in the story). Her consideration for what makes a work 'superior' to the original is almost comically shallow, unnecessary, and -- worst of all -- boring.

Sarah Z actually uploaded a video today that sort of resonates with this type of writing, and I can't help but feel like if Lily's work were to be actually published it would fall under the same umbrella as HGS--Sacrificial Trash. A work by queer or marginalized artists that is bad, but not so bad that it warrants the kind of hatedom that it inspires, most of which being peddled by actual bigots farming clicks based on outrage. Like sure, HGS is pretty cringe, but so is dedicating your entire Youtube channel to making fun of it for being cringe. People who express dislike on such a massive scale for things like The Little Mermaid 2023 because it has a black Ariel in it, when that same level of outrage usually doesn't get directed towards the other Disney remakes that are all the same levels of needless, mediocre regurgitation of something people already know and love. The product isn't even out and people have already decided they hate it enough to make the teaser one of the most disliked videos on Youtube, and the fact that this remake in particular changes the race of its lead character makes it hard to ignore that prejudice is largely at play here.

The video never really comes to any kind of conclusion as to what to do about this issue, however, because it feeds into both sides of the culture war. You've got actual bigots who think the mediocre garbage is bad because they went 'woke' and included gay or black characters, and then the people who feel the need to defend the mediocre garbage like their life depends on it because if they agree that it is bad they are only giving the bigots more power. They have to resist the urge to decry diverse media or else they lose the war. And that's the same sort of thing Lily's writing seems to intentionally play into. Disliking the Sith Resurgence for any reason is exactly what bigots would do so you either just have to ignore that it exists and just not offer any kind of public criticism or else give people more fuel to keep the fire of intolerance burning. Lily says people love Aliana but have never read Sith Resurgence. These people would probably leap to her defense were you to criticize the character, or even the story she originates from. Because the story no longer matter. The art itself is less important than the fact she is a minority character being written by someone claiming a marginalized identity and that we need to stop holding marginalized artists to such a high standard, as if them creating a bad show that represents themselves and their community is what's wrong with entertainment as a whole.

Oh, I agree completely that Disney does this kind of stuff. They absolutely pander to left-leaning people by casting a black Ariel, or having articles written about how they have their first gay character for the twelfth time. That said...the fact the Little Mermaid teaser sits at 1.5 million dislikes and Aladdin at a measly, in comparison, 31 thousand indicates that this isn't just a case of people not wanting another pointless remake of a classic Disney film and is instead another example of a worthless corporate product becoming the next big battle in the ongoing culture war, the most divisive film of the year will be called The Little Mermaid, and Disney is loving the media circus because it's publicity either way and they get to virtue signal about how diverse and tolerant they are only a few months after that whole 'Don't say gay' scandal.

The people who hate these remakes still came out to dislike this one, obviously, but let's not kid ourselves by saying people just so happened to wake up and realize what trash they've been getting fed with the only one to have a black lead. The dislike is absolutely from the fact Ariel has been race-swapped. It has the usual grifters like Ben Shapiro acting as if they care about a Disney movie about a mermaid. The cynical part of my brain refuses to believe they had no idea people would react this way, but now they and their defenders can lump in any and all criticism in with the same people who are arguing that a black mermaid doesn't make any biological sense.
