My point was simply that yes, there are NATO mercenaries in Ukraine. Ranging from organized mercenary groups like Forward Observation Group and Academi, to various freelancers like that American-looking fellow I posted above.

Calling them "volunteers" doesn't change the fact that they are mercenaries and will be treated as such.

I just read that local authorities have to buy their own equipment out of their budgets for the mobilized troops...that's insane, that's something the Ancient Romans got rid of during the Marian reforms because it was such a disaster for force cohesiveness and logistics.

Finland joining NATO is such an L for Russia it's hard to explain how bad it really is. It's such a total symbol of defeat and national decline, not unlike the PLC when they lost Smolensk to the Russian Empire back in the day.

I'm unaware of precedent, but yes you did a 200 IQ connect the dots there. This seems to be really specific to the kind of mercenary work that was going on in the 20th century.
The 2000s PMC gold rush skirted around the convention by not having the contractors act as combatants. They weren't even allowed by the companies to wear camouflage in theater to signal their non-combatant status. Obviously they were also working in an environment where if they were caught by insurgents the conventions would be as useful as a chocolate teapot.
