I read this whole thread and this is my conclusion about the difference between a genuine smile and soy face:

If you were to make a cartoon or sketch of that expression, would the eyes be half moons or circles?

Try to make your eyes as wide as possible and smile at the same time. At least on my face, it kind of hurts.

Soy face is inherently a "hide the pain" expression.

It honestly is uncomfortable...even a gaping mouth soysmile is.
