That phrase was basically a smear job by the fake news of the time against people who actually did research and what was derisively called "muckraking." "Yellow" journalism was basically real journalism, as compared to the glossy propaganda that the "real" journalists of the time (i.e. fake news) were propounding.That's what was called "yellow journalism".
If you look at the "yellow journalists" of the time, they're people like Upton Sinclair who actually did real journalism. People remember their names, unlike the names of the nonentity scumbags who smeared them with these slurs.
