James Cameron's Avatar to get four sequels - The message will still be the same

To be perfectly honest, besides James Cameron did anyone truly want a sequel to Avatar? Was there like a fandom waiting all this time?
Of all the projects Cameron did over the years, why is this the one he got autistically obsessed with to spend 20 years working on (by the time Avatar 5 is out).

I'd rather he do multiple original films during this time, but if its gonna be sequels; Cameron-helmed Terminator or Alien sequels, True Lies 2, hell even sequels to Titanic would be preferable to this furry shit

It is actually a good question. My hypothesis for a while was that he was using the Avatar sequels as a trojan horse and have very little to do with the original movie while going off and doing something radically different. But no, he just remade The Abyss. That was it.

So what was it about the Avatar sequels where he absolutely had to do them? Who knows? My guess would be hubris. He made two consecutive movies (separated by a decade) that were the highest grossing films of all time. It might be difficult to go back to making smaller movies with that kind of ego? Or he just doesn't give a fuck and spent most of his time deep sea diving for science and only did them for the money?

I think it really is ego since he keeps bragging about Avatar 4 and seems to really like to one up himself with digital effects.

I understand wanting to do a sequel since it was a big moneymaker and maybe there's more story to tell and surely the whizbang special effects must have advanced so much in over a decade since it came out and it'd be fun to use them and try to be on the technological bleeding edge of film production in 2022, but 4 of them? Avatar 5 really?

Well True Lies was good except for Tom Arnold, there's just no way in hell they'd do a franchise about terrorist arabs after 9/11 no matter what. It could be totally different story but the optics on that are so so so so so dead.

Hollywood passion projects are routinely shit. The worst ones are actor based projects, but with directors it's a lot of time a book they try to force into a film. Avatar... Would have been a terrible book by how lazy, uninspired and fetishistic it is, cutting it down to 2.5 hours at least had an eye candy and a sane length, but it very well have been the herald of Hollywood culture dying for the past decade+
I sat through a three hour passion project once....it was called Silence. It was a fucking chore even as someone who knew the source story about Catholicism in Japan.

I liked Tom Arnold in True Lies. Yeah, he's definitely a faggot now. And a faggot back then. But I will defend him in that, it was good casting. True Lies still holds up too.

The main thing what I always found repulsive about Avatar, is its message, which says, it's A-OK to throw away your humanity and completely betray your own species. I am not sure if it was intentional, a precursor of progressive lunacy, or just a colossal fuck up of the "white man falls in love with savage princess" trope. The trope only works, if the protagonist realizes the difference between him and the savages is purely superficial and ideological, everyone involved is human, so fighting is just a pointless waste of life. But in Avatar the savages are weird, alien, cat prople and humans can only interact with them, if they become creepy skinwalkers. Humanity is also on the verge of extinction, to survive, they need that unobtainium (real subtle James). Jake Sully's task is to find a peaceful way to obtain it, but he does fuck all to achieve this goal. He just falls in love with the blue chick, turns on humanity on a dime, essentially dooming it and IIRC manages to transfer his mind into his artificial na'vi body, killing his human self.
It promotes the dystopian nightmare the elites wish to achieve. You should inherently feel bad for existing, you should force yourself to live in a pod and escape into an artificial happy place, where you can be anything, but yourself. If you still cannot cope with your filthy existence, the state gladly euthonazis you. All this, to protect the holy environment.
Jake Sully is the ultimate white race traitor. He was the herald for the clown world we live in. I wish the humans would just orbitally bombard him and his degenerate savages until they are dust.

You are really spot on with how disgusting it is to root against humanity. Think about all the soldiers he killed who were just there to do a job. He killed them with suffocation and bows. Fucking war criminal.

It's the going native cliche but it's also literally bestiality, and becoming the blue cat through the mind connection thing or whatever is just like putting on a fur-suit then banging a dog. It's a science fiction version of this where he gets to actually become the animal through science:

very gay and cringe. James Cameron is sus. Probably molests cats like Shane Dawson.

I remember a behind the scenes article where it was revealed, that the initial design of the na'vi was more alien and animalistic, but it had to be changed, because Neytiri needed to look fuckable. Staff members were questioned, whether they would bang her, or not and requested to provide feedback on what would make her sexy. I get that they wanted to make the na'vi sympathetic for the audience, but this horny shit was creepy. Especially because the end result is still quite unappealing.

If they just made Neyteri tan, with white hair and just a straight up catgirl then I think there’d be actual fanboys of her; or at the very least, more people would be team Navi

Think: Aisha from Outlaw Star

Well, anime catgirls generally just look like every other anime girl drawing but with cat ears (for some reason). Weird maybe but less weird than the blue cats in Avatar because they are 99% human just with different ears (live action photo-realistic catgirls would look weirder than as a drawing too though).

Making them less alien and more attractive isn't a fix anyway, the entire concept should be scrapped tbh. The creepy bestiality and fury subtext is just one part of why this shit doesn't work.

Of course, with that said, it made a billion dollars so I guess people like it. I don't get the appeal but that's that.

I also do not see how this can be stretched out to 4 sequels. The first one already felt bloated and empty at the same time.

If this film does make a boatload of money, maybe it will get more people want to see movies in theaters again instead of just streaming them instead. Of course Top Gun made a shit ton of money and was well liked and that didn't get people to watch other shit in theaters. We'll see what happens I guess.

I think it would have also helped, if they gave her a personality. Tali from Mass Effect had tons of fanboys after all, despite being a faceless, digitigrade, three-fingered alien, who always wears a suit.
