The Final Fantasy Thread

The Pixel Remasters just got a ESRB rating on Switch/PS5
I'm really mad at square over this, if you're going to charge full price for games that are 30+ years old, have the common decency to offer a physical release.

If I'm getting ripped off, I want to be able to hold that feeling in my hands. And then put that feeling on my shelf six times over so I can look at the image the spines make when you line them up all in order.

And I hope they do the same for Dragon Quest, 1-7 are only able to be played on the GBC, DS/3DS as far as the latest releases go that are not IOS garbage, and just having an HD release of 3 doesn't cut it since 5 is the better game. if they had to pick one to give the HD treatment to first to get people interested 5 would be it, 3 very loosely ties into 1 and 2 and it makes more sense to play 3 after 1 and 2 (because 3 is what happens before the events of 1 and 2). If you're playing 1 and 2 as a follow up to 3 it's going to give you a sense of disconnect despite being later in the original timeline, mechanically they're inferior. 1 and 2 were grouped together the last few times because they're short games.

I just want a new Dragon Quest Monsters, or a collection with online play like the Mega Man Battle Network collection.
Dragon Quest Treasures is a half measure to a new DQM game, that's mostly due to it supposedly starting out it's development as one.

It's pretty close to what a modern DQM game would be in many aspects. But Square seems to be aiming for Dragon Quest to be as big internationally as Final Fantasy, and it's looking like 12 is going to be the game that they're betting on doing this. Much like in the wake of Final Fantasy 7 Square released a load of new spinoffs and rereleases and remakes of earlier titles in it's wake. I think if DQ12 has the success that Square is expecting that we will likely see a similar treatment. If DQM were to be brought back in full, I'd wager that it would have heavy asset reuse from 12 since they're pretty much the same monsters.

Damn guys, I’m thinking Crisis Core is kinda bad actually.

I kid. I’d say it’s more average. Very average. I’m glad people like Zack but the story he inhabits just isn’t very good imo.
Look, everyone knows the only reason to play crisis core is to see puppy Zack learn harsh lessons and the final cutscene where he passes his legacy to cloud. Everything else is just mid at best.

And that final cutscene is generic compared to the speechless dog's death he got in the original. Crisis core is a tearjerker, but the original is powerful art.

I loved Crisis Core on the PSP, but I have no interest in playing it again. Most of the sidequest missions are just go to the boss in like 8 generic maps while hugging walls to avoid encounters and collecting and fusing Materia to increase your stats. That and despite the customization of abilities, the combat really is just attack till its dead most of the time.

Wow, that's actually hard to read. The cringe is physically stopping me from doing so. It's also a little sad, but overwhelmingly cringe.

“Around that time I told my teacher about it and came out very distressed and saddened” lol
Dog the guy was saddened because teach had enough sense to tell him, in what i assume were better phrased words

"your waifu aint real and you need to grow up"

For context this man is in his mid 20's

I figure Tidus ruffled feathers because FFX came out in 2001, an era where if you weren't aloof and moody, you weren't cool.

I liked him. FFX was just too linear for me, though. I didn't realize how much I missed all the towns and dungeons, and how FF worlds were generally fun little places to hang out and relax until FFX.
I think Tidus and FFX ruffled feathers because there's actually a lot of fairly realistic real-world problems mixed in with the usual Final Fantasy high-fantasy nonsense. Primairly coming to mind is "being the son of an abusive and alcoholic father" and "honest to god racism where <race> is called grease monkeys".

It almost certainly caught people by surprise after the "Magic Underwater Soccer Match" intro to start dealing with problems that felt extremely close to home for a lot of people.

IMO, FFX is the best one because of the characters and story. Not to mention the battle system and the late-game content that is definitely worth the grind, minus those stupid fucking ultimate weapon minigames. Plus, Blitzball is pretty fun once I got the hang of it and some good skills. I've never done a No Sphere Grid run, but that's something I might look into in the future.
