I haven't really been keeping up with TIHYDPs myself due to the salt or exceptionally bad gameplay being so rare. He either fake rages, acts like a clown for his retard audience, whines like a spoiled child, or acts like an insufferable nitpicking know-it-all. Still looking forward to SF 6's release since fighting games tend to produce some good salt.*
* When he's not punching down on scrubs
He's been unwatchable since at least three years back. Even the TIHYDPs largely revolve around greasy begs and massive stalling because, fuck, it's all he does any more. 0utsyder's stuff was always fairly long winded but he's putting out a 9 hour TIHYDP pokimanz with a 6 minute intro and frankly, fuck that. Phil's just withholding the fun stuff and cherrypicking games ever since Yakuza LAD broke him. He skips anything even remotely challenging and just plain avoids gameplay for the longest time, meaning a TIHYDP editor would have to slave over hours and hours of filler to get to the five minutes of good stuff, and they'd end with a 30 minute TIHYDP.
Literally, even legendary stuff like his horrible, horrible Divinity 2 playthrough ends up being unwatchable because he waffles and menu's for literal hours before getting into the one battle that swiftly and mercilessly crushes his oddly shaped head in twelve seconds. To be fair to him he's kinda mastered that style of play: He gets laughed at less because nobody's gonna put up with three hours of him deliberately slowing things down to a glacial pace.
He walks in games, for fuck's sakes. Phil WALKS in videogames. Imagine how much fucking time it would take to beat even something easy and quick if you walked everywhere. You could easily turn something pretty braindead like Final Fantasy X, normal playthrough, no bonus bosses into a 400 hour affair JUST by refusing to run. And he takes frequent pauses to "take in the sights" which usually means shoving his gin-flower nose into the nearest wall to analyze the design equivalent of flavour text and talk out of his ass for 3 to 10 minutes about every little nook and cranny in the map. Not to mention still playing games on Easy, in spite of 20 years of experience, like God of War, refusing to play Hardcore on New Vegas so he could still chug stimpaks, Yakuza on normal, Oblivion on normal, Skyrim on normal...
Even his bread and butter goldusty playthroughs are just a mess. Souls games veteran? More like really good at being handheld and guided by Dented Derichs. Survival horrors? Phil will waffle and menu for two hours before he even gets to the first enemies. Callisto Protocol's first non tutorial enemy made quick work of Phil's slow reflexes and little understanding of game mechanics, but you had to wait nearly AN HOUR to see him get to that. Action games? Either he plays them on normal and buys a million heals (Yakuza) or they're so easy at a base level even Phil can skate through them, and they are also infrequent due to long development times, which perfectly feeds into Phil's "Play the haht new releases" model so he can forever linger in walking sims and shitty indie story-only games.
Doesn't help that Phil's at his happiest when playing some heavily dented, kid friendly bullshit on easymode and the modern gaming industry is all too happy to provide games with what I'll call "Bugsnax energy", like that cringefest that is High on Life. Mind you, he still did poorly at Bugsnax AND High on Life, but these are games nobody really cares for. He still sucks at games, he just sneaks those few moments into a veritable mountain of stalling.
Racing, fighting, and competitive multiplayer where he can't just curate who he fights. These are the only game genres where Phil can still provide some entertainment since there's no handholding someone through any of that. Problem is, due to the state of modern gaming, we're lucky to get one or two playthroughs of these genres a year.
I'm sure there's some gold here and there across his 120 hour slugfest through Skyrim, as there will be in Oblivion, there certainly was a lot of that in New Vegas, but no one's gonna watch 200 hours of that, specially to make a video about it.
