King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

Please don't bow to the Woke bullshit and recast Kahn...
If they do, Jimmy Yang might be a good choice. Not sure he could match the intensity though, so they'd have to do a calmer Kahn.

Isn't there an Asian e-celeb that sounds an awful like Kahn?

I ask this because once Mike Henry announced he would stop providing the voice of Cleveland, the crew hired an e-celeb to do the voice of Cleveland.
This guy in particular.

If they're going to recast Kahn, they might as well recast Luanne and Lucky. This recent trend of retiring animated characters just because their VAs died is dumb. I think The Simpsons started that "tradition".

Id agree with the 2nd half of this;

But as far as Luanne and Lucky go, you also have the added in thing that their characters were more just used for comedic gag and the actual fleshing out of Luanne as a character who was growing or with her own world basically became non-existant as a result of that.

Its probably an actually decent enough excuse to write them off that fans would accept, and if they appeared in the occasional episode, it might not be so bad.

I could honestly see their child having more of a role in any revival than them.

Id disagree in part, though not strongly. I think that the later seasons fell through a bit;

but not in a bad way. Even when it wasn't necessarily the best (Lucky, revamping Louanne in that relationship, etc) the show was still very fun and enjoyable.

You can also easily observe the seasons that Judge was more involved in, and where he was less involved in as well.
It was weird. They were clearly out ideas and shoehorning wacky shit in like Khan being manic depressive and Boomhaur being a surfing legend and the principal moving in with Bill and cucking him, but the writers were so good most of those episodes were still a solid C+/B-.

I'd say Luanne and Lucky would be name dropped in a first episode of the revival to tie in the story.

I actually like the one where principle Moss moves in with Bill. Carl is in top form as an obnoxious asshole and Yuri the Russian is one of my favorite one time characters.

"Go away Yankee Doodle"
"That man tried to sell me an illegal comedy product"

I really liked that episode too! I just thought it was a good example of them doing that later era Simpsons thing where they throw a random secondary character into the Simpsons' house and call it a day. The fact that King of the Hill did it and it was really funny is a testament to how good king of the Hill is.

The KOTH revival is one of those things where I'm 50/50 on if it will be any good or not. The Beavis & Butt-Head revival is actually good but that's Paramount and they aren't as Woke or as controlling as Disney is.

A lot of this is going to be riding on how much creative control they will let Judge and Daniels have.

On my series rewatch, Im up to season 7. I just watched Pigmalion.

I forgot how twisted and dark that episode got. Back then, I guess I took it for granted because South Park did a lot of dark stuff too.

But looking at it now, this is not something I'd expect from King of the Hill. Still a great episode though, lol.

Pigmalion's so infamously dark precisely because it felt so utterly out of place when it originally aired. It was obviously a Halloween episode that was written during Season 5 and meant to air during Season 6, but for several reasons, it got delayed. Some people say it got delayed for being too dark, but I'm not entirely sure that's the main reason.

This was the start of football pre-empting most of the fall lineup on Fox during the early 2000's, when even The Simpsons had to wait until November to air their Treehouse of Horror episodes, so I guess the showrunners felt airing a Halloween episode in November or in December would be tacky. The Simpsons got a pass because they always had an annual Halloween special since the second season.

Pigmalion finally aired in Season 7, but not during Halloween since once again, football pre-empted any Sunday premieres until the start of November. Instead, it aired in the middle of January, which made the episode more jarring.

If Pigmalion was meant to be a Season 6 episode, that would kinda explain why it's so out there as well. It's the same season where Bill stole a tank while Peggy nearly caused an international incident by her sheer incompetence as a Spanish teacher. Season 6 is one of the more wacky seasons in terms of outlandish plots but it's also one of the best seasons as well, IMHO.

I always thought of the show as "wacky in part, but realistic",

which as a vein of comedy, is grossly underrated. Youre right on the nail on things getting more wacky in later episodes, and sometimes it can be really amusing (going japanese is one of my favorite arcs), but if you get too wacky, or have too many wacky episodes, or it turns into something like the Simpsons, its just not what I'm interested in for the show.

Khan becoming a redneck gladiator, for instance- I get the social issues theyre tackling in part (his daughter needing a sob story to get into a school because Asian), but it was just too out there and not consistent with his character, or the tone of the show.

It's not even that things can't be wacky, there's plenty of it within the show-

but it's almost like every good KotH episode is the type of thing that could happen to you or you could talk about with your friends over a beer in the alley. Things that might have actually happened in your crazy but normal neighborhood, etc. Its relatable comedy basically.

That, and three of its animated shows, The PJs, Futurama and Family Guy were screwed over by the network (with the latter being the worst offender), if we're talking about their animation lineup. The former was then picked by The WB for newer episodes until it ended for a single season, while the other two were later picked up by Adult Swim for subsequent reruns (The PJs would eventually be picked up by Adult Swim several years later).

Fox did try to reinvent the wheel with their animation block once American Dad premiered, then calling it Animation Domination, but even that show and The Cleveland Show were both screwed over by ratings, focusing more on Simpsons and a revived Family Guy, while King of the Hill got cancelled with Adult Swim to pick up for reruns and having to air six additional production ordered season 12 episodes that were previously never aired on Fox.

So yea, their sports lineup is what's killing the animation lineup, with only Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers to be the only three biggest cashcows on the network. If the network gave King of the Hill, The PJs, Futurama and American Dad more respect, then they would've still be airing on the same network today, but Futurama moved to Comedy Central for new episodes (and four of its DTV movies) until 2013, only for Syfy to pick up for reruns, but now it's coming to Hulu for newer episodes, while American Dad moved to TBS by 2014 and is still on the air today.

Would Hank actually have a problem with that? Isn't the joke that Hank's antagonistic attitude towards Khan based on Khan's arrogance and elitism and not any sort of bigotry?
If only Hank wasn't that much of a gosh dang racist.

Yes. Remember, Hank did not care that Bobby was dating Connie (most notably when he advised Bobby to grab the “10 footer” ladder to be able to kiss her after Khan put up that fence).

He also went out of his way to prove he’s not racist when Lady Bird attacked the black water heater repairman.

I really hope they keep these elements in the new show, because Hank is genuinely a good guy.
