He's now in prison for multiple counts of rape, which was a surprise to literally noone at all because he was the most obvious sex offender going. You could smell it on him.

Thompson’s son apparently wrote a book about a decade after his suicide. He was very clear about how Thompson was incontinent and couldn’t really live independently anymore at age 67. It was all due to chronic alcoholism. He made a point to write about it so people understood the price HST paid for his substance abuse. It was the major reason he offed himself.

Hemingway got that way too, which is why he blew out his brains with a shotgun.

There is nothing glorious about death by substance abuse.

Hunter rampant drinking and making himself part of the story eventually made him more of a character than a writer. If you compare Tom Wolfe's "The Last American Hero is Junior Johnson. Yes." in 1965 to Thompson's "The Motorcycle Gangs: Losers and Outsiders" published in 1967 (which eventually became the book Hell's Angels) there's no comparison. Wolfe was a far more talented writer and journalist. Every writer/journalist aspired to be Wolfe, but there already was a Tom Wolfe. What allowed Thompson to stand out from a sea of competent journalists/writers was self-inserting himself as a wild man, radical character reporting and interacting with the events unfolding among the squares.

Every high school kid only gets recommended Hunter Thompson because "weed, LSD, booze!" not because they appreciate his writing (which can be great, but plenty of great writers are out there) Guys like Ralph just got stoned and watched a FALILV DVD a lot when they were bored.

In my late teens I remember discovering so many great writers of that era and wondering why HST got so much knob polishing in comparison. I can only determine it's because teenagers fetishize "drugs, booze, guns" and plus a big Hollywood movie meant the sped crowd didn't even have to bother with that icky reading stuff to consider themselves a big HST fan. I'd still say half think Johnny Depp is actually HST.

To me his best book was "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72", because it gave pretty unique insight into campaign trails that I haven't seen elsewhere. I also thought his Hell's Angels book was good, but I haven't read Wolfe's. Hell's Angels got his name out there, his coverage of the Nixon/McGovern race and his subsequent friendship with McGovern got him famous, and then FALILV was pretty much his last work. FALILV wasn't even really journalism, it was more social commentary that communicated his disappointment in the counter-culture.

Yep - I highly doubt Ralph has done more than watch FALILV and read his Wikipedia article.

Thompson fell off incredibly hard after FALILV - he was reduced to doing speaking tours that made him suicidal because his work had been reduced to 'hey it's that guy that does drugs! do the thing!'. As another poster said, Thompson paid for his life of drug use and alcoholism with being incontinent by his mid 50s and getting Alzheimer's by the time he was 60. He shot himself and let his wife find him, and his son wrote about how abusive and terrible he could be.

Overall though, Thompson is far more compelling because he actually had a rise and fall and could be a good writer. Ralph is just a neverending trashfire - but he really does fancy himself a highly intelligent, tortured intellectual/journalist-type.

The worst were his tweets where he would painfully lament how he 'really must write more' articles for his shitty 0 traffic website. And when he would write pseudo-intellectual hitpieces to demonstrate his command of the English language on Null and his ex.
