President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Challenger tanks to be delivered to Ukraine by Royal Air Force – Kuleba

Royal Air Force is expected to transport Challenger tanks and other military goods to Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said.

"I was honored to use the services of the Royal Air Force airline. Soon Challenger tanks and other things extremely harmful to the Russian occupier will fly to Ukraine on this or a similar aircraft," he said on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

"For Ukraine and its defense forces it will be a very useful day," Kuleba said.

UK expands sanctions on Russia

The U.K. has expanded its sanctions against Russia, putting more pressure on “Russian military and Kremlin elites,” it said.

The latest sanction package hits six entities providing military equipment such as drones for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as eight individuals and one entity “connected to nefarious financial networks that help maintain wealth and power amongst Kremlin elites,” the U.K.’s Foreign Office said in a statement.

Among the organizations targeted by these latest sanctions are CST, a manufacturer of Russian drones which have been used to destroy Ukrainian combat vehicles, and RT-Komplekt which produces parts for helicopters used by Russia in their assault on Ukraine.

Among the individuals sanctioned are Nikolay Egorov, who was until recently the deputy chairman of the largest privately owned oil refinery in Russia, and Sergey Rudnov, the owner of pro-Kremlin news outlet Regum.

The sanctions were unveiled on Wednesday as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made his first visit to the U.K. since the Russian invasion. He met British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and addressed the British Parliament, and is due to meet King Charles.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said “these new sanctions accelerate the economic pressure on Putin – undermining his war machine to help Ukraine prevail.”

“I am determined, consistent with our laws, that Russia will have no access to the assets we have frozen until it ends, once and for all, its threats to Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and integrity.”

Sunak wants to see Ukrainian victory this year

Sunak responds by saying the UK's objective remains Ukraine's victory on the battlefield this year, adding that Putin's aggression can't and won't stand.

That's why the UK is accelerating its military support for Ukraine, he says, including training its marines and pilots on advanced combat operations.

"We will continue to support Ukraine to ensure a decisive military victory on the battlefield this year," he says.

German defense minister admits Ukraine doubts

Boris Pistorius said it was “difficult” to determine if Kiev could retake Crimea and Donbass

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has expressed uncertainty over Ukraine’s ability to achieve its goal of retaking Crimea and Donbass. The official claimed that the West’s continued support for Kiev would be key in determining the outcome of the conflict with Russia.

Speaking to Germany’s Bild newspaper on Tuesday during an official visit to the Ukrainian capital, Pistorius was asked if Kiev would manage to restore control over all the territories within its 1991 borders.

The minister described the question as “difficult” and likened it to a “look into the crystal ball.” While stopping short of a prediction, Pistorius commended the bravery of Kiev’s forces, adding that “it is vital that we continue to support Ukraine to the best of our ability.

This is an intense war of attrition. There are insanely high losses,” the German official said.

When asked if he stood by his previous maxim that “Ukraine must win the war,” Pistorius replied: “Yes, of course.

According to the German minister, much like Ukraine’s ability to make territorial gains, the prospect of peace negotiations remains uncertain.

Pistorius, who took office on January 19, confirmed Berlin’s commitment to providing Kiev with 14 Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks by late March, with the training of Ukrainian personnel expected to start in the near future.

Pistorius stressed that he sees the delivery of air defense systems in the coming months as crucial, while calling into question the potential usefulness of submarines, should Kiev request them further down the line.

Responding to Western nations’ plans to supply Ukraine with tanks and other heavy weapons, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu warned on Tuesday that “such moves are essentially dragging NATO countries into the conflict and could lead to an unpredictable escalation.

However, he expressed confidence that the Russian military would destroy the hardware.

Top Russian officials have consistently argued that Western arms deliveries only serve to prolong the conflict unnecessarily.

Yes, because all those Ukrainian protesters rallying for democracy were clearly CIA agents shipped in from America.

And when you see "National Endowment for Democracy" who exactly do you think that is? Pro-tip: learn about how the CIA uses NGO's as cover since they're not answerable to Congress.

Then explain to me why the Ukrainian population is fighting tooth and nail to stop the Russian invasion. It seems to me that there should be way more support for Russia in Ukraine if the pro-Russian government was "democratically elected" and the movement to overthrow them was an "unpopular coup". Shit, if the latter was real, the Russians wouldn't need to invade, since the government formed after the so-called "coup" would get overthrown by the people.

What, is Zelensky fighting a two-front war now? Against both his own people and Russia? Are the majority of his forces mercenaries paid for by CIA-backed NGOs?

Russia: U.S. has questions to answer over Nord Stream explosions

Russia's foreign ministry said on Wednesday the United States had questions to answer over its role in explosions on the undersea Nord Stream gas pipelines last year.
Commenting on a report published earlier on Wednesday that said the United States was involved in the explosions, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on the White House to comment on the "facts" that had been presented.
Reuters was unable to verify the report, published by U.S. investigative journalist Seymour Hersh on his blog, alleging U.S. involvement in the explosions.
The White House said on Wednesday that Hersh's account was "utterly false and complete fiction".
Moscow, without providing evidence, has repeatedly said the West was behind the explosions affecting the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines last September - multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects that carried Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
Western officials have denied those accusations.
"The White House must now comment on all these facts," Zakharova said in a post on her Telegram page where she summarised Hersh's main claims regarding the alleged U.S. involvement.
Investigators from Sweden and Denmark - in whose exclusive economic zones the explosions occurred - have said the ruptures were a result of sabotage, but have not said who they believe was responsible.
Russia said the countries "have something to hide" and are purposefully blocking Russia out from the investigation.
Construction of Nord Stream 2, designed to double the amount of gas Russia could send directly to Germany under the sea, was completed in September 2021, but was never put into operation after Berlin shelved certification just days before Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine in February.
(This story has been corrected to say that blasts were inside exclusive economic zones of Sweden and Denmark, not in their "territorial waters")

Was Hitler justified invading the USSR since the communists weren't elected? Should the US invade China since Xi wasn't elected? How about Belarus since Lukashenko obviously isn't winning elections legitimately? Or how about the Vietnam war? North Korea? Oh wait that would all be Western Imperialism of course.

Are you one of those people that think the war started last year? What do you think the populations of the eastern provinces have been doing since 2014? Why do you think the Crimeans welcomed them with open arms?

That doesn't mean everybody in Ukraine loves the Russians or is welcoming them. Lots of Ukrainians especially in the western part of the country identify more with the western world and would rather have lots of gay pride parades and iPhones and Kardashians and other cool shit. Ukrainians are not a monolith.

The White House said on Wednesday that Hersh's account was "utterly false and complete fiction".

Put some respeck on ol' Seymour Hersh's name. The White House denied his story when he published about the Mai-Lai massacre in the Vietnam War too. They also said he was lying about the CIA running torture camps in Abu Ghraib during the Iraq War. They also said he was lying about the Obama Administration running an assassination list that included some American citizens on it.

Fact is, nobody with any common sense has ever thought anybody other than the US blew that bitch up because we basically said we would and we're the main beneficiaries of it. Surprise surprise.

I'm not trained to deal with special needs people, so forgive me if my approach doesn't work for you. But as an exercise in understanding - why don't you list out some key differences in the justifications for the US invasion of Iraq compared to the Russia invasion of Ukraine.

What about the rest of Ukraine? Most of Ukraine would rather run away from the Russians or fight and die against the Russians. Which means a stunning majority hates the Russians' guts. Imagine that. Again, it's hilarious that you keep simping for a nation that clearly doesn't give a shit for its own people, nor do they have the Ukrainians' support. At least America pretends to care with its welfare programs.

Iraq had a dictator nobody outside of his elite liked. To the point where Iraqi army units surrendering was a common sight in the American invasion of Iraq. Ukraine has a president that the locals are willing to die for.

Because even Ukrainians who initially supported Yanukovych weren't too happy about the whole "Russian invasion" thing.
Especially when Russia went mask-off and made a (failed) attempt on Kiev.

The great fallacy of the vatnik/russiaboo narrative is that the 2014 voter lines accurately predict who would be willing to support their own domestic military versus those who would support that of a foreign invader come 2022.

Zelenskiy UK visit and other stuff. Denys can be quite interesting, sometimes cynical, questioning about his government compared with others outside Ukraine who tread more carefully, lest they seem to amplify or confirm Russian propaganda.

Earthquake in Turkey probably kills two Ukrainian citizens, no contact with 19 Ukrainians so far – MFA

2 min read

Two Ukrainian citizens, probably, were killed as a result of an earthquake in the south of Turkey, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko has said referring to the country's authorities.
"As the Turkish side said, two Ukrainian citizens, probably, were killed as a result of the earthquake. The embassy is checking this information and taking measures to identify the victims," he said on Facebook on Tuesday.
The ministry also knows that four Ukrainians were injured, according to Nikolenko.
"They were slightly injured, there are no threats to their lives, and they do not need to be hospitalized. Those injured have been provided with temporary housing and foodstuffs," he said.
According to the ministry's spokesman, in general, diplomats have found 38 citizens. They are cooperating with the Turkish rescue services to find the other 19 Ukrainians, who have not made contact yet.
"The Foreign Ministry is preparing to send Ukrainian consuls to the city of Gaziantep. The diplomats from the embassy will be able to arrive at the natural disaster area as soon as the situation allows against the background of the state of emergency introduced in Turkey," he said.
Nikolenko also stressed that the consuls will coordinate on the spot the assistance to Ukrainians, and provide them with warm clothes and essential items.
"On the way back, the embassy plans to transport by its vehicles the Ukrainians who would be willing to move to other regions of Turkey," he said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have signed the UK–Ukraine Declaration of Unity (London Declaration) during Zelenskyy’s visit to the UK on Wednesday, 8 February. The declaration aims to deepen cooperation between Kyiv and London.
Source: European Pravda, citing the declaration
Details: The declaration states that the UK’s military, humanitarian and economic support to Ukraine since the invasion has reached nearly £4 billion. The UK is "proud to be the largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States," with support of £2.3 billion in 2022.
The UK remains committed to provide aid to help restore Ukraine’s energy grid and other civilian infrastructure and to continue sanctions against Russia, including pursuing all lawful routes to ensure that frozen or immobilised Russian assets are made available in support of Ukraine’s reconstruction.
The UK stressed that it is working with Ukraine to help develop the country’s longer-term force structures and capabilities and will work with NATO allies ahead of the Vilnius Summit "to deepen Ukraine’s interoperability with NATO, and to accelerate Ukraine’s transition to NATO standards."
The UK stressed that it welcomes President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula and is prepared to help Ukraine implement its principles. It was also announced that the UK will co-host the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London on 21-22 June 2023.
"We are confident that together with our allies and partners, we will defeat Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion and build a stronger Ukraine where peace and prosperity will prevail," the London Declaration concludes.

Nah.
This sort of semi-rogue actions have the potential to collapse the trust in NATO as they would be essentially a direct attack on an ally's energy supply.
The US has already nearly all negative press. Nobody trusts its institutions and politicians.
Fuck with this further and eventually everyone will despise you. And you are giving ammo to China and Russia who are already pretending that if US did something evil, they should also be allowed.
This is how you get WW3, when all the big powers simply pursue national interests, without even pretending to play by the rules

The idea was complete independence with an alliance with Russia, not Russia taking over. Local Donbas fighters were killed who objected when Russian officials took over the government. A lot of people died due to this naive idea of Russia.

OK, now, what are you demands on Russia.

Because all I see is the typical bullshit leftist/commie faggot shit of demanding that the US tear itself down.

Peace and Nuclear De-Escalation wouldn't happen if most of these were accomplished.

ANd "Abolish War", what, are you five?

The saddest part is if the Allies had stood up for Czechslovakia in 1938, Hitler would have been done for and the nightmare that followed would have been avoided. The country was a literal fortress with one of the largest, most modern militaries in Europe but the Allies sold them out for "peace in our time".

And then did it again with the invasion of Poland when they sat on their asses rather than attack the completely depleted German forces on the Western Front.

TBF on Poland, the allies - militarily - were completely fucked in 1939. No one had the arms, or means to transport them, to fight a re-armed Germany.
Modernization programs had begun but they wouldn't bear their fruit for a few years WITH war-time retasking. Its easy to look back in retrospect and know that was the moment, but all France and Britain saw was a USSR/Germany team up they were not even close to being able to take on. (Don't forget in the 1900s, and then again in the 1930s, Germany was a swing nation playing the UK and Russia off each other, and was a vital trading partner for both).

The Sudetenland however was 100% cucking. Germany still had airborne and weapon advantages, and probably could have successfully invaded, but the Czech primary defensive line would have chewed up Germany, bad. And if Czechoslovakia hadn't been forced to cuck under, Austria - no matter how amenable to German messaging - wouldn't have switched.

However after showing how he was able to completely outplay western europe, all the eastern european powers saw Hitler as a strong, clever, capable leader to unite behind.
Here's the thing: if the Allies had simply not cucked to Hitler and opposed his actions, and Hitler had decided to move forward with invading anyway, the invasion would probably have never happened. There was actually a military conspiracy operating behind the scenes to overthrown Hitler should he invade Czechoslovakia, led by Hans Oster. They planned to storm the Reich Chancellery, arrest or assassinate Hitler, then restore the Kaiserreich on Kaiser Wilhelm II's grandson, Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The conspirators were in contact with the British government via Theodor Kordt, as they needed the British to remain strong against Hitler. But Neville Chamberlain cucked, Czechoslovakia fell, and any chance for a coup collapsed, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Basically it translates to eviscerate your military and abandon your long-term global alliances to allow Russia to win its war of aggression and allow China to do whatever it wants worldwide.

These people should be investigated for treason, honestly.

What about the rest of Ukraine?

It's a moot point now, but I think if the eastern provinces were allowed independence like they wanted and voted for after the coup, and Crimea was recognized as Russian and guaranteed water rights, then Putin wouldn't have had a cause to push further.

But that was never going to happen and it's fucking retarded to think poking a bear won't cause issues.

Also, the US has to be involved in war somewhere. What else were we supposed to do after pulling out of Afghanistan? Downsize our military industrial complex? lol ya right.

Yeah, no issues until putin decides he wants to chew off another small bite of some post soviet state. Just like people said there wouldn't be issues after the invasion of Georgia.
