I'm gonna guess that those are infra-red LEDs on the camera and the phone's sensor was able to pick them up just like the camera's sensor would be designed to do. I've seen anti-paparazzi glasses that have blindingly bright infra-red LEDs on the sides of the lenses that make any pictures taken of the wearer unusable because they just have a white blob where their head is supposed to be unless you take the picture on film or have an IR blocking lens on your camera
