I’m surprised there are so many “I’ve always thought Linus was a bad employer and this confirms it!” replies. When I commented, during the last hiring frenzy, that LMG seems like an awful employer and people should look elsewhere first, I was inundated with replies calling me a “hater” and “jealous”. I guess even the fanboys are getting fed up.

I had to read the policy a few times to understand what it is trying to say. Certainly there is no legal basis LMG can stand on if an employee purchases stock of a company LMG reviewed or is involved with. The only thing they can do is fire you for violating this policy which is STUPID.

This would only fly with wet behind the ears new college graduates. No company that I am aware of has this policy. They may put in controls to block you from selling company shares around quarterly financial announcements because you can easily have insider knowledge, but no way do those other companies mentioned would even pull that shit.

I hope those salaries are US$ rather than CA$. Even if it's US$ that's not going to attract anyone with a technical background who's half-decent unless they are starfuckers who want to work at LMG for the internet points. If LMG really has a "pay low and see who leaves" policy, then Linus' intent is to hire starfuckers. Which isn't a great look.

Remote work, eh, that's company to company (and often office to office). There's some things you really have to be in the office for, so that's nothing super unusual. The key is to have a policy with sufficient flex in it to be reasonable for both parties.

Using a spreadsheet instead of a clocking system is, again, not unusual.

Either you pay by the hour or you pay a salary (even if you pro-rata it out to an equivalent hourly rate). It can't be both. If it's a salary then on "overtime", tough shit, reasonable additional hours are part of the deal for what should be a higher guaranteed (and average) salary. If you're paying by the hour, then do that. Overtime is the flip-side of a lower guaranteed salary. If you're employees are routinely putting in enough overtime that the total pay is too high then either (I) manage projects better, (2) hire more people, or (3) make them salaried. This isn't rocket science, but is a managerial failure.

They only just implemented a retirement program? Even two-bit YouTube companies that employ three people and a hamster manage to have 401K's or equivalent. No excuses there.

A general observation would be that nobody, with very few exceptions, is exempt from the Peter Principle. Whether you hit it early on in your career or after twenty-five years, most people will hit it. This goes for owners of SME's as well, the founder who can take a company to 20 employees may not be the person who can manage it at 80 employees and increasing complexity across multiple business units. It's a different skill-set. Less entrepreneurial, more strategic, process driven, and organizational.
