Hey ho, let I tell a story about coal and steel.
So, to make steel (extreme strategic shit before ~1980, now ony strategic shit) you need coal and iron ore. Places when you can dig coal and places when you can dig iron ore.
Most valuabe places with this resoucers in WE are Rhineland and Saarland (coal) and Alsace-Lorraine. For fuckin centauries France and Germoney (many iterations of Germoney) was fucking with eachother (and sometimes with entire Europe) for Alsace-Lorraine.
After war of 1871 Alsace-Lorraine was in Germoney (they taked it from France).
After 1918 it returned to France.
After 1940 Germoney annexed it again, but after 1945 it was returned to France.
And this is where story starts. After second world war Germoney was occupied by four countires (France, USA, UK, USSR) and several german areas was ceded to other nations (most important: Upper Silesia, we will return to what this was most important). German for few years even wasn't existing as a state - from 1945 to 1947 they was just only four zones occupied by other powers.
In 1947 rebuild of Germoney was started by merging UK and USA zones into
Bizonia, and in early 1949 it was enlarged by adding most of French occupation zone. Most of it - France turned Saarland into quasi-state called Protectorate of Saarland (something ore from colonial era than post-1945 Europe). Protectorate used to have ow currency (Saarfranc pegged at 1:1 with french franc), own ID-booklets (every resident was obligated to have own ID-booklet, and France was telling that every such person is equal to be a french citizen) and even has own sport teams which even take part in World Cup in 1954 and Olympic Games in 1952.
This Protectorate was so fuckin' simillar to Territory of Saara from 1920-1935. Main difference was that ToS was protected by League of Nations, but PoS was protected by France which was not-so-friendly ambitions about it.
When West Germany was estabilished in late 1949, dyplomatic shitstorm was started about future of PoS. West Germoney wished to get it back, when France preffered to keep it as protectorate or even annex it in future. When ECSC (very first step of bringing EU to realm of reality) was estabilishedby six nations (France, Germoney, Itali, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg - last three was already in custom and partially monetary union from few years called Benelux) West Germany asked for giving power over PoS to ECSC (that request was one of reasons why West Germoney even joined ECSC). Answer was NO from Frace, but they agreed to make a referendum in PoS about it future fait.
Because no one in PoS was happy with France (when you are France, you have control over german territory don't force everyone to learn french...) finally in 1957 PoS returned to West Germany.
Why PoS was so fuckin important and why ESCS was asked about taking care of it? Well, after WW2 Germany lost their coal mines in Upper Silesia to Poland, PoS have some strategic coal mines (important both for Paris and Bonn) and ECSC was rofmer for sole reason to make single market for coal and steel between it members.
It was important for France to be sure that West Germany will not build in secret some tanks and take again Alsace-Lorraine (in that years no one was sure that USA will stay for next centaury, Marshall Plan was already in force but NATO was establisihed in 1949 - and West Germany wasn't a member of it before 1955). Europeans in that years was sure that USA will not stay forever - and that was reason for many things like british nucelar weapon project which resulted in 1952 in Montebello nuclear test, french nuclear weapon project or few other not-so-funny things.
So yes, I can agree that peace in Western Europe is a result of USA involvement, but also by integration. None empire in Europe last for long, so now they are trying to make it from economic side, not traditionall bloodbath.
