RWBY - The Hindenburg on which Rooster Teeth rests its hopes, dreams and future

Critter made a rewrite audiobook for Volume 9 before the actual release.

Long story short: Critter constantly has women of colour—Harriet, Robin, and Emerald—be massive assholes out of bumfuck nowhere.

Watched the first episode of Volume 9. I don't hate it so far but I have no expectations going into the Volume. If this is a purely "character focused" Volume I might even enjoy it since it's less likely for them to ruin the plot even more or do something stupid. What they're doing with this Volume definitely brings up its own problems but I'm fine just seeing Weiss and the others hang out.

I must've totally forgotten after seeing the trailer because I was really surprised to hear Luci Christian's voice coming out of the mouse. Also is it just me or do Weiss and Blake's chests seem to have gotten bigger over the show? Also more yuribait with Blake and Yang already, for the love of god just have Ruby or Weiss ask if they're a thing already, I'm so sick of this.

The blatent Cinderella backstory they gave her (8 seasons into HER BEING AN IMPORTANT VILLAIN) didn't rouse sympathy for her, because it was lazy
That was so dogshit I believe I ranted about it here. I decided to revisit the episode a month ago and it’s funner interpreting that whole sequence as proof that she’s always been a spiteful maniac from childhood. That hunter who tried to save her has to be the most brain dead individual on the planet, continuing to pay for expensive rooms at the hotel who abuses the psychopathic kid he decided to train to become better at killing stuff. If they brought back Penny just to kill her off I don’t know why they can’t do the same for Cinder, they probably think they’re setting something up that’s really “clever”.

Sometimes I remember when Kerry said they literally thought about calling her “Cinder Ellaaaa!” (pronounced the Spanish way) in an interview and I wonder how they managed to bumble their way into a multimedia franchise.

Cinder as a villain has long overstayed her welcome. Her kill count is high, and she's cheated death so much, the fandom fucking hates her. The blatent Cinderella backstory they gave her (8 seasons into HER BEING AN IMPORTANT VILLAIN) didn't rouse sympathy for her, because it was lazy. Watts, being based and redpilled even told her that it didn't excuse her being power hungry and void of any other personality traits later in the volume.
Her not having depth didn't really matter in the first three volumes, since the show itself wasn't trying to be deep and whatnot, she was just the smexy big boss. In the later volumes, she just becomes a generic crazy bitch with awful designs lol.

I remember feeling actually, unironic, literal cringe in my body when her shitty song played. It was so fucking bad.

Again, I can only assume the plan was to have Cinder be a discount Azula, in that while showing Azula’s childhood was a way to show that she was always ruthless and manipulative and that her brain was just as bad as her brawn (if not more so), the backstory was to show that Cinder was always a power hungry lunatic and was willing to do anything to get it.

Honestly, the only thing Cinder has left is to show her be more Grimmified so she’s more monster than person when she faces Ruby, but that’d make her less of the waifu bait the show apparently wants her to be (in the “please step on me” and “evil is sexy” way).

Sometimes I remember when Kerry said they literally thought about calling her “Cinder Ellaaaa!” (pronounced the Spanish way) in an interview and I wonder how they managed to bumble their way into a multimedia franchise.
Well, Rooster Teeth had a guy who had a reputation for kick ass action scenes on their payroll, that guy made an IP the wider Internet was mad for when the trailer dropped, and then RT got moved around in the corporate world to where they have more opportunities handed to them thanks to that IP, including introduction to a foreign market and a distribution deal.

It’s also kinda weird how the world looks as modern as V1 Remnant even though this is when Cinder was a child (not that I’m going to blame them this time for not sparing the thought to develop the setting for the recent past just for a one-off).

You’re explaining a lot of things I’m being rhetorical/couldn’t actually care about. Are you looking at my join date and assuming I’m new or something???

Team RWBY wasted time "hanging out" during V5. We don't need another volume of that.
Weiss's boobs got a total buff in V7. The fans actually weren't too happy about that, because she was the resident small cup waifu, and it just kinda showed that M&K just wanted all of the female characters to have a good-size rack.

"🎶WoRk AnD sHiT nO oNe LoVeS yOu, DiD i MeNtIoN jEfF's DiCk Is HuGe🎶"
About the level of subtlety the song had.
And fuck that huntsman.

I really don't like listening to pretentious grunge music. Even reading the mock lyrics made me cringe.

Not just that but it made it look like all the girls were the same body with different clothes. Which knowing RT they probably are.

That's kinda based, honestly.

Everything about that story arc was bad, but that song was probably the worst thing ever. I never thought in my life I'd physically cringe in my life before I saw that whole scene with the song.

Well compared to how annoyingly stupid what the characters were doing was at the start of Volume 8 I'm certainly enjoying the start of this Volume more. I doubt I'll ever genuinely "like" or think the show is good again but at least I can still get some enjoyment from it.

Rwby fans on twitter really are the worst breed. I had to see this dogshit art so i might as well share it here too

Since we've already done some roasting on Einlee, I think it's fair that we talk a little bit about Erin Winn. She started working for RT during 2015, and became the art director in 2020. She's designed nearly every new character that has appeared V3 onward, redesigns for *most* of the preexisting characters excluding team RWBY, as well as a few types of Grimm. Needless to say, she's an important part of production, but I don't remember seeing much of her in this thread aside from when Twitter users had a chimpout over a drawing of Yang with two arms.
Now, to put something out there about my personal opinions, I think her art style is alright, and she does a genuinely good job with redesigns, unlike Einlee. I am a simpleton however, and who knows, my standards may be low, so take that with a grain of salt.
What I felt like pointing out, was that she has this odd pattern of making minor characters more visually appealing than important ones.
(why the hell can't you download images from the wiki anymore)
You have characters like Team ABRN that have simple yet colorful and contrasting designs that showcase the diversity of Minstral's culture, team FNKI, which is... team FNKI, and Tock, that sadistic croc lady that cut Maria's eyes.
Compare those guys to characters that appear much more often, and have a continuing relevance to the plot... like Ilia, Vernal, Fennec and Corsac, the aceops, and the Happy Huntresses. Granted, all of them are wearing a uniform of some type, but they're all very bland and unmemorable to me, even if the latter two have very different body types. Illia wears a very simple stealth suit thing most of the time, Vernal looks like a background character aside from her complex tattoo, Fennec and Corsac are all red, the aceops can't wear practical outfits for some reason (and I hate the fact that the uniform colors clash with their color schemes), and the Happy Huntresses's outfits are steps away from being pallette swaps. Robin doesn't even appear to have an established color scheme. Her clothing and personal features look like they were inspired by vomit. I don't get the choice for the Happy Huntresses to all use the same weapon either. The higher military personnel get unique weapons, but some political vigilantes can't?
Maybe I'm just being autistic, but I wanted to gripe about it.

-The question is asked of what it’s like to take a character from an established storyline to a unique one, and how that’s seen from the POV of an actor. Barbara says it’s interesting to be separated, especially at the end of V8. The moment she really loves is when Team RWBY finds Yang and Yang says that the crew isn’t supposed to be there and that if they’re together, things must be bad. She calls it “a little heartbreaking”.

Lindsay says that she loves this is happening. She mentions Ruby’s journey in V4 in an attempt to be a leader and not put anybody else in harm’s way. From her standpoint, she loves exploring the world, but Ruby is dealing with a lot and is on her own by force.

-The question is given about how an actor portrays carrying the old baggage but having to react to something crazy. Barbara says the biggest deal is for Weiss since her home was destroyed and unable to fully process the events, with Eddy saying Weiss is very no nonsense in general. Lindsay thinks Ruby has taken some of Weiss’s attitude, where she’s annoyed with everything despite all the whimsy around her.

Barb says that it’s always a challenge when actors get put in these scenarios of trauma, but says that’s part of the fun of being VA is putting yourself into the situation and finding out how your character would deal with it. She describes Yang as using comedy as a way to get through tough situations, and she says that comes out a lot in this volume, something she calls “really fun”.

-Kerry says that even though characters are in a bad place, they won’t just be moping around all the time, saying how everyone has been in a bad situation where something tough was happening, but you still crack the occasional joke. He describes it as taking the baggage , putting it into a bottle, and slowly releasing it. Barb says it’s like “sitting on your suitcase to zip it.” Eddy says that Ruby specifically having a moment where everything is catching up to her is one of the more interesting about this volume.

-Kerry says it was amazing to have a lower number of characters to deal with compared to previous volumes. He says it’s always tough to balance everybody and their screen time , so he liked being able to scale back and really knowing who to focus on. Eddy says making sure everyone is able to get their dues is tough, and a lot of the time, many characters are lumped together. He says one of the things he likes about chapter two specifically is telling a lot of smaller stories in one episode. Barbara mentions/jokes about having a three hour recording session.

>"We're so glad that we decided to shoehorn in a filler season during a turning point of the series."
>Another thing with character development. RWBY fans have been saying for a few years now that the character development isn't actually development- the members of team RWBY are just becoming more and more like each other. I mean, I know "iron sharpeneth iron". While there is truth to that statement, people don't really change, particularly the core aspects of their personalities. Team RWBY acts as a single entity with four anime girl models at this point. The team specifically said that Ruby is taking on aspects of Weiss's personality. Yang is apparently back to making jokes now, after rolling in edge for the past four volumes. It's like they forgot that she was an anime Barb.
> "oh my god, we reduced the cast, now we can actually WRITE" Bish you did this to yourself. The Atlas arc brought back Penny, Ironwood, and Winter, AND introduced a buttload of new characters with the Aceops and Happy Huntresses. That's 21 "good guys" to keep tabs on, as well as the eight main villains. Oh my GOD, this show is so bloated.

Oh what the fuck, I thought from the thumbnail that it was going to be a chubby version of that sheep Faunus girl :cryblood:

I can't believe this man, who wrote music for the same show for almost a decade at that point, couldn't think of anything for the scene but straight up 'nobody loves you'. Is he an accomplished musician outside of RWBY or is it clear RWBY was his only real gig?

Honestly, not really. The most he’s done outside of RWBY is music for Red vs Blue in a band he used to be a part of.

I like how the last episode was so insanely boring that the thread almost immediately fell back into discussing characters and problems that showed up like a whole volume ago.

Cinder fucking blows. You can have a chaotic force of pure evil that the protags have to overcome, a lot of my favorite villains are just that, but they completely lose their mystique when they behave so incompetently that the only reason they're still kicking is due to writers that have no idea how to handle their collapsing narrative.

The character design is genuinely terrible and feels like it's gotten considerably worse.
