I have to disagree friend. Tanks still matter a lot, They still matter because they still able drive over anything but specialized anti-tank obstacles and the harshest terrain and
resist or speed through all but the heaviest ambushes or fire. And have the fire power to take apart most obstacles while doing so. Simply, everything IFV's don't quite do on same level.
It's still is harder to stop tanks from getting wherever the fuck they want to go and fuck shit up than any other ground unit.
When they are properly backed by mechanized infantry.
The current ATGM's don't change that.
In fact people been saying ATGM will render tanks obsolete since the first gen ATGM's. That hasn´t happened yet. And I don´t think it will any time yet. And while top attack anti-tank missiles are a threat despite the sub par showing of Javelin in Ukraine.
We will see more and more tanks addressing this by having radar and IR absorbing paint and or cladding or netting based camouflage. (You know stuff like
barracuda, Ghost, etc.)
Coverage or better coverage of the top turret and hull with non-explosive and non-energetic reactive armor and active protection
system that will be able to target top attack ATGM and other projectiles. Both by soft or hard method
. And we will likely see DIRCMS for armor also.
As far as drone observation with artillery. Yes, valid point.
Very valid point!
While back in the day tanks could drive through artillery fire with minimal losses. Unless it was a very dense artillery fire.
This days, drone observation along with guided rounds (whatever shells or rockets) especially, special anti-tank rounds, makes it a deadly combo against tanks, let alone other armor. Never mind against infantry. Truly the artillery retains it's title as the king of the battlefield because it still will fuck everything.
However, tactical mobility of artillery is still limited by logistics as you well know, more so then armor. To explain to other people here. Artillery has become very mobile post WWII especially in the tracked form.
Artillery logistic train however is in pretty much in all countries wheeled based. America was the only one that had artillery logistic train somewhat tracked based. On top of that artillery arm alone uses about half the logistics of a divisions logistic train.
So artillery will not always be a great anti-armor trump card on the battlefield in a lot of situations. And neither does artillery backed with drones substituted a tanks capability on the battlefield either.
And in regard to drones. I think modern electronic warfare. Backed by even more dense AA and SAM support at divisional, regimental and battalion level. Especially designed against UAV's. Will somewhat even stuff out.
Along with portable
ATGM's becoming even more duel purpose, pretty much merging with MANPADS. To even heavy ATGM carrier. Like the planned
Russian next gen Baykal NLOS multipurpose missile carrier. (Bottom Right) with single missile being anti-air and anti-tank and soft targets.
Then of course is the fact that armored vehicles,, etc, especially future planned ones. Will be getting more and more sensors added from active and passive, in radar and or optical form.
This coupled with programmable munition for them, regular and or guided, normal and air burst. Ranging from small caliber to 30mm or larger. Make them far more better at engaging air targets in the future.
Hell, I even expect self-propelled howitzer's having ability to engage air targets in the future.
On a side note
Russian actually did considered that for
A-222 Bereg mobile coastal artillery modernization program. The suggested plan was to convert it to 152mm caliber and add AA mode. But that seem to have gone nowhere.
