Video's up on Youtube now. Started off with 700 dislikes to 1.7k likes, but has somehow changed to 2.8k likes and 200ish dislikes since then. Anybody else seen something like that or is it just Return Youtube Dislikes fucking up somehow?

I couldn't stand Dominic Noble because adaptation studies are retarded to begin with, but he doesn't either go deeply into the actual adaptation issues like how do you convey the essence of x, or the contextual issues such as production, author intent etc. so I find his videos very unsatisfying.

I can't believe Yahtzee and the Escapist spent more time attacking a British woman because they were told so by mentally ill men in dresses than commenting on war crimes. Sad.

Actually, here is one irony about Dominic Noble.

While I dislike the whole "adaptation" thing, I ave actually had fun with his videos where he just.... reviews (really summarizes) books. Just books, that don't even have a movie attached to them or anything. That time he reviewed four Amish romance novels for example, or the Timothy Zahn Cobra series.

Part of the reason is actually the same reason I still sometimes dig people like Linkara and recently have started to like JRPG reviewers/summarizers.... I have an interest in reading but its such a time-consuming activity (that my brain seems to be having a harder time with as I get older, often resulting in me quitting) that its actually easier on me to just listen to some fuckboy on Youtube summarize it while making jokes about the more nonsensical elements. And in the case of authors like Timothy Zahn, I would never have read his shit anyway.

So basically I kinda wish Dominic Noble would pivot from being an "adaptation analyst" to just being a guy who summarizes some random books he read (well, actually by his own admission he usually listens to the audio book because he apparently has dyslexia). He would legit be more worthwhile that way.

A story about wizards and magic - it's rip off of some games like .... uh? ... and um? ...

Like you can be a Wizard/Spellcaster in some popular games (Elden Ring, D&D, FFXIV) but it's actually pretty rare for a game to be Wizard focused which is why it's a breath of fresh air for some people - the most you "normally" get is a Mage's Guild (like in Skyrim).

It don't like Harry Potter all that much but the idea that we have a deluge of extremely Wizard focused games is absurd and disingenuous.

The story I've always heard is that it's kinda-sorta a myth. Gaming CONSOLES were at an all-time low but arcades were surviving and personal computers like the Commodore 64 were doing just fine. But since a lot of gamers are console-tards (and moreover, Nintendo tards) they tend to only know the "gaming got big again when the NES came around" part.

One article I read decades back (and of course can't find now) mentioned that we almost had another crash in the mid 1990s because of shit like the 3DO, Jaguar, Philips CD-i... this was exactly the same nonsense that caused the first crash, but the difference is now the industry was much bigger and thus could weather the storm.

Well, its not like Jim was wrong. There's only so much time in a day you can devote to a game and that varies by person. In the realm of online games server health keeps people interested and leads to "natural monopolies" in the same way that social media works best when you are on a big site with all your friends. Thus a world where everyone tries to make live service/GaaS games will result in far fewer games being able to exist at any one time.
