What are the most pretentious games ever made?

Gonna be boring and say YIIK A Post Modern RPG but I actually unironically like how terrible it is. The game is coated in pretentiousness but I'm a tolerant person if your gameplay doesn't suck and those first few versions of the game played like garbage and the narrative was true patience testing. The fact that the entire multiverse revolves around the most douchey character ever created could work but even in recent versions of the game Alex as an MC is just insanely unlikable and when he's not that he is just mediocre.

Every review i've ever seen recommended is hours long. For how boring and bland that game is everyone seems to love sperging about it and have very many long things to say about it. It has definitely peaked a lot of people.
Watch one review and you can get the gist because actually playing it isn't worth it. Funny how if it were something like a comic or cartoon it would have been slightly less shit but because it had an RPG attached to it you get to know how it feels to play a game where the game part is just kind of there.

Bioshock Infinite is a fun game that’s made worse by pretentious messaging.

The result of anyone being able to make a game now. You get some really good stuff, but it’s all in a sea of pretentious, faggy, copy and paste garbage that’s always about the same “muh mental illness” story. We get it. Daddy didn’t love you and you wanna kill yourself because people said mean things to you on the internet.
I will never understand someone using entertainment to display their depression to the rest of the world. I'm here to have fun and I'm a way I expected your product to be fun and not a bunch of characters whining about feeling sad for themselves. Just make a social media post and be done with it so we can unclog the indie game market from all these samey self pity games.

As an addendum, i started replaying this game mostly because oh fucking god I SPENT 60 BUCKS ON THIS GARBAGE to recall a few bits. I know this game is incredibly manipulative but my memory's rusty from over a decade since i played it, for example, look at this fucking garbage. Notice the big puppy dog eyes on the two of them, much larger than anyone else in the crowd, the overly animated entertainer pushing you on to stone these people, and of course, the fact that you can't actually stone them because the game's set up to ignore that choice should you dare to make it. It's amazing just how little of an understanding of old American culture these people seem to have, the whole thing seems to be vaguely southern what with all the belles, the accents, the hardcore Christianity, and the 19 million variations on "AH H8 DEM DERE NEGROES", but it's all so surface level. They worship George Washington because everyone knows who George Washington is. The confederacy is hardly brought up or mentioned, despite "The South shall rise again" being a very popular creed among those folk, and would be incredibly fitting given they fucking succeeded from the union themselves, the KKKlansmen are actually painted blue for no discernable reason, and women serve in the military police, when such a thing would be unthinkable for people of that type. The shooting gallery type stuff is fun enough i guess, but in terms of making give a shit - i just don't, there's no reason not to just shoot first and ask questions later, there's no reason to care about any of the characters. They're all terrible one note caricatures(the commies are, well, commies, and are said to stab you in the back as they are wont to do, the residents of the sky city are all sheep that screech about the false prophet or niggers any chance they get, Elizabeth is just a disney princess bitch through and through and prolongs the game by being such, etc) and the whole thing reminds me of a comic i read once:

I hope whatever Ken Levine is working on now fucking stays in development hell.

and of course, the fact that you can't actually stone them because the game's set up to ignore that choice should you dare to make it.
I swear there was some quote from Levine years and years ago where he bragged about how, in play-testing, 90% of people chose "don't throw a rock at an interracial couple", like it was some evidence of the game being capable of turning hardened racists tolerant, rather than it being the default stance for most people. I've tried looking for it, but there's so many "Ken Levine huffs his farts about how good his game is" articles on the internet that I can't find it.

I think Wheatley being unbearable was kind of the point of the character, but yeah in retrospect the writing wasn't good. A whole bunch of quips and very tryhard humor like "the part where he kills you" where everything tells you that including the achievement, GLaDOS doing the "I'm a potato" quip.

Portal 1 wasn't even that big on actual storywriting, but Portal 2 tried to do a whole bit of world building and indeed, the writing was off in that. Half-Life didn't seem to suffer from that since it had a different writer, or rather one writer, Marc Laidlaw. Portal 1 had two writers and Portal 2 had three writers.

At the time this wasn't that bad and maybe some considered it funny, but now all games have an annoying characters like Wheatley with annoying quips and the part where Glados turns into a potato has devolved into "lol, so random" humor, everytime I mention this I just remember this video
portal 2 gets a pass
first, they did it before it was cool
second, it was funny at the time, cause this kind of dumb humor hadn't been ruined yet by years of oversaturation
and third, most importantly, because the gameplay is absolutely excellent. p2 is still the highest rated game on steam to this day, and for good reason, it's just really really fun to play

I think the reason that they do it is to be relatable to people that also have depression, only thing is that you could do that with self help books for an example, and if that story is way too personal, it might alienate a majority of people or accidentally turn them into Mary or Gary sues if the character is a self insert

I actually think RDR2 is quite pretentious. Strange really, given RDR1 wasn't at all. But when the RDR2 prologue started up with that title card in cursive talking about the end of the West, my eyes rolled so hard they almost fell out of my head
It took the ending scenes of RDR 1 and thought “everyone likes this, so let’s make the whole game like it” and forgot that it only worked after it spent a whole game building to it.

I hate RDR2 because it completely undermines everything in RDR1. Dutch’s gang shouldn’t have been super commie aspirant and should’ve been a more traditional bad guy gang. The whole story is fucked up thematically. Should’ve just done a completely different game like they did between redemption and revolver.

As much as i like the game introducing Fink as immedaitely being a racist has the subtly of a brick. It's the 1910s i could have already assumed there was extremely deep racial tension in the game but it being part of the narrative weakens it a bit. The first two games barely dealt with these themes and if they did they were in a few audio logs and not directly in the plot of the games.

I feel like a balance is very necessary because people will enjoy a "this is how i feel" type of game where the creator tells you their experiences but doesn't drag it out as long as possible. Most people can relate to experiences but a lot of people don't have time to listen to someone's life story.

What seems to be the biggest interest point in Yiik is that it fails in virtually every way imaginable as a game and a story. It's a train wreck of everything not to do in gaming as a medium. The game deconstructs the usual indie creator by showing how he's so up his own ass that he comes up as creepy, stupid, unoriginal and self centered while trying to project those flaws into everyone else.

I guess I'll also mention RDR2. The game tries to play itself as an epic, most infamously the long as shit opening sequence, only to really boil down to "notice when you are in a cult".

Last of Us 2 by a long shot simply because of how fucking miserable the whole tone and it’s major deaths being so excessively brutal simply as a way to disguise a cheap nihilistic tone to force drama as brilliantly deep and complex writing. I swear Arthur Morgan’s horse had a more dignified death than the characters in this game.

is that it fails in virtually every way imaginable
it is like "indie game, the game". It lends itself to shit on a lot of things.

I guess I'll also mention RDR2
I played only a few hours and haven't felt like going back , i want to give it a proper try and get to where it opens up more but i feel like i might end uninstalling it early. Its not doing anything for me, the gameplay feels like molasses, i don't even feel like exploring when grabbing something of a cabinet is gonna take 30 seconds.

I don't recall ever seeing much hate for Portal games, not even from the usual contrarians. Only other game like that is probably THPS in the category of games most people seem to like and not have any problems with.

I haven't played it, but does The Binding of Isaac get a pass just because it's gross (like South Park) and not a walking simulator? The game is basically all piss and shit and dead baby humors, but layered around an anti-Christianity message and symbolism. It strikes me as being the equivalent of Piss Christ.
It ends up feeling way less offensive in practice because while it has lots of Christian symbols and references, they're all thrown in haphazardly and any point the story is trying to make doesn't ever coalesce into anything resembling a coherent anti-Christian message. It's just a weird mess.

Tbh i remember playing Bioshock Infinite soon after it came out and enjoying it but i don't actually remember much about it, its very possible if i play it now i will have a different view on it, i mostly liked the setting. Crazy how the game came out ten years ago.
My biggest gripe with Infinite was the rail system felt so goddamn useless.
Sure, you could get away from enemies. But the only enemies where it mattered (The Handyman) could just zap you off of it.
Plus you would think that being able to get up to 50 miles per hour would let you do something when dismounting, like maybe knocking over a Handyman for a free shot or two. But nope. just... move around. Felt wasted.

Flash and the early versions of isaac were semi coherent about the "christianism bad message", but later versions focused more on the deep lore about Isaac suffocating in his chest, dying and ending up in purgatory since he wasn't baptized, and Repentance has a more nuanced "televangelism bad" message that ends on a semi open ended theory bait ending (also is the game really anti christian when most of the best items in the game are the angel pact ones?)
