These are not men who were taught to be moral and principled and that the key to self-esteem and belonging is becoming something worthwhile yourself.

Agreed. There are multiple factors involved.

I think you're correct on the lack of decent male role models. Frequently, any man who aspires to a career working with children, particularly very young children, is looked at askance, questioned about his motivations, or outright accused of being a paedophile. It's terribly sad, really. In addition to boys' being discouraged from developing nurturing traits, young men cannot act as role models for children without accusations of salacious predilection.

Children need both female and male role models. People lament that children, especially boys, are being raised by single mothers with no adult male presence in their lives. These same people don't want a man teaching their kid's kindergarten class, volunteering with the neighborhood school carpool, or taking care of their children at daycare.

Of course kids who don't ever experience men in caretaking roles grow up with fucked up views about gender roles. Girls who don't have appropriate male role models grow up to be totally afraid of men or inclined to seek the approval of completely unsuitable partners because they think that male behavior is necessarily domineering and violent. Boys wind up thinking that "real" men can't ever show vulnerability or demonstrate authentic care for a weaker party. Add in unfettered access to the Internet at younger and younger ages, the social isolation wrought by our increased access to and dependence on technology, and the influence of pornography, and it's no wonder that the kids aren't all right.

I know it's just a meme, but ResearchGate is almost entirely trash: the kinds of scientists who have tons of time to spend on what is effectively a social media site are probably not doing very much actual science. The study shown here appears to be no exception. Their claim that none (0%) of the survey respondents, regardless of sex, gender identity, or sexuality, were expected to be "exclusionary" of troons is absolutely fucking hilarious. What is their justification for such a claim? It's so absurd that it really calls into question their entire rationale.
