Sega Will Not Attend E3

"Unannounced projects"?!

Please, daddy SEGA. I'm fucking begging you.

*insert inhaling copium meme here*
E3 its fucking dead, been like for the last what, 10 years or more? I only regret not being able to go there in the late 90s and early 00s because I was a kid and didnt have a journo pass either, those were the crazy days when all the awesome shit was happening

The market its too consolidated now, game budgets are so fucking high nobody takes risks anymore but the indies, all the same rehashes, even the consoles are boring
Amazing to think that outside Sonic, Puyo Puyo and Phantasy Star Online, the majority of the profitable Sega IPs were all created/acquired after they left the consol market.
Not like they bothered much bringing old franchises back, most of the new IPs that were created during the dreamcast era were left out to rot
That's the most galling thing about it. SEGA knows there's a fanbase for this game that would be perfectly willing to shell out money to play it again - why else would they constantly tease us? - and yet they do jack shit with the original game itself.
They could do like a presale for a game of one of their old franchises that only exists as a concept and if there are enough preorders then actually make, like that mijia company from china

But they wont
Modern Sega, Sega after the hostile takeover by Sammy, one of the largest Pachinko companies, really has nothing in common with classical Sega, the Sega that produce consoles and created 99% of the games Sega is actually known for. Sammy bought classic Sega cause A) they wanted the brand name to be able to better push their Pachinko Machines and B) cause classic Sega owned a lot of Arcade businesses that could be converted into Pachinko Parlors. That’s the reason why modern Sega doesn't care about its heritage or past cause the actual owners of Sega or more precise the Name Sega, and the Name Sega is all that is left of the brand, don't care about videogames, never cared and certainly didn’t buy classic Sega cause they wanted to continue making good games. Sega, at least the one people are nostalgic about, largely died with the Sammy acquisition and by now is simply completely dead.

Good videos on the subject:
Sega got fucked after the dreamcast, most of the good games that launched for the ps2, og xbox and gamecube were actually dreamcast games that were still in development when the console got canned, but when those games ran out the company was little more than sonic and a publisher for other studios like relic, team17, etc...

If you ask me sega its more or less another jap zombie company, they got no drive nor objectives anymore

It's Official! Sega Poll Reveals Fans Want The Sega Saturn Mini Next

View attachment 4870894
Now. SEGA. Will you maybe finally read the fucking room and actually give the Saturn love for once, or will you just continue ignoring it and its stable of classics?
You could roll your own like this guy does with a bandai kit and an rpi4

Problem is, and maybe thats why sega isnt making one, that even the rpi4 cant properly handle the saturn's fucked up architecture, and most of these mini consoles use way cheaper hardware than an rpi meaning that a saturn mini would have to pack a punch, something like a modern snapdragon or maybe even an nvidia chip, which would make it cost way more than other mini consoles but the saturn was never popular outside japan

Tho I bet it would sell like crazy anyway because a mini console with those specs would be awesome for emulation, a snapdragon can easily emulate even ps2 and gamecube games now, even some wii ones
skipped the Saturn completely,
Why tho? did you get a dreamcast?

Why tho? did you get a dreamcast?

I didn't have the money in the mid-1990s and also it seemed to be a three horse race between Saturn, 3DO, and Playstation, not to mention the 32X and Jaguar although both were pretty obviously floundering, plus Nintendo would be releasing a new console soon, so I was content to just continue playing the Genesis/Sega CD and Super Nintendo even if they were fairly long in the tooth.

By the time I could afford a Saturn, it was already on the way out, so I got a Playstation instead and, yeah, I got a Dreamcast eventually.

I wanted a Saturn of course, but I had a PS1 and there was no way I was getting another console. We eventually sold the PS1 and I got an N64 because of the Pokemon craze. I'm sure if there was a Sonic game on Saturn it'd have been more of a priority to me.

I remember buying the Saturn.
I was so eager to get one I bought it the second I had enough pennies to do so.
Staring at it while saving up to buy a game was agony.
I got mine for $50 with Virtua Fighter 2 at a place called MicroCenter (no not that one), which was basically another FuncoLand before GameStop became a monopoly. I got it at a time when everyone just stopped giving a shit about it, which became my main strategy for buying consoles since then (with a few exceptions like the 3DS line).

Blockbuster was still a thing back then, so I was able to rent a few games before i made the decision to buy them. Sonic R (and 3D Blast) I wound up getting on the PC, so the majority of my Saturn line-up were mostly 2D and 3D fighters (Fighters Megamix, Fighting Vipers, Darkstalkers Revenge) with the exception of things like Bug! and Rayman, which the latter was more graphically impressive on the Saturn than the PS1. (not surprising though, Saturn did 2D games better).

Thankfully Bug! also wound up being released on the PC, and I can run it on a VM without issues, but the music in that version is fucked and doesn't sound as good as the Saturn version. Virtua Fighter PC, luckily, has no changes or issues and is a 1:1 port of Virtua Fighter Remix.

Ever heard of the Diamond Edge 3D?

Honestly I just want either a remaster or remake of Deep Fear; that shit was cash, and with the survival horror boom going on bringing back the underwater horror kino would be pretty great.

Also because I want high def renditions of these absolutely amazing monster designs:

I'm with you on the games.
I don't remember what my first Saturn game was but my LGS set me up with the imports.
My strategy became wait till the US version came out then buy the Japanese version for nothing.
Bulk of my collection was fighting.
Sold all of it after I finally got my NEO•GEO.

The entire PC port of bug! was fucked, ran like shit back in those days even if you had a pentium

To think that investment in nvidia must be worth 100x more than sega does now, when did they sell their share of nvidia anyway?

After the Sammy takeover in 2004 all of Segas internal Game developing Studios where ''reorganized'' and Sammy in general forced Sega to move away from developing console games toward what Sammy wanted them to do. That drastic intervention into Segas internal Structure and the forced refocusing was the major reason why a lot of the big Sega legacy developers like Yu Suzuki and Yuji Naka left Sega shortly after. Sega suffered a terrible Brain Drain in the early to mid 2000s which is the reason why they went from releasing hit after hit in a wide variety of genres to turning into the Sonic company. To give you an example Sammy immediately shattered the new studio that Yu Suzuki had created internally at Sega to develop Shenmue 3 after the 2004 hostile takeover.

Here's an Article written during the Time period detailing Sammys Plans for Sega:

I know, sega has been just a brand since the mid 2000s, microsoft buying them would've been a much better outcome

The actual missed opportunity was when Namco wanted to merge with Sega. A Merger of those two arcade powerhouses would have been pretty great.

That would've saved it from sammy but thats it, the real missed merger was with bandai back in 1997

Had that happened then sega wouldnt have run out of money with the dreamcast

Interesting, haven't heard about that before.
Sadly I doubt it would have really saved the Dreamcast since the problem at the end of the day just was that people weren't buying it despite the fact that Sega did everything right be it its launch line up, the price of the console or the games. Consumer confidence in Sega had just run dry and I honestly can't see the Dreamcast selling much better or turning more of an profit in the long run even if Sega could have kept it on the market for at least a while longer.
From its launch in the USA in late 1999 to the end of 2000 you had killer App after killer App: Sonic Adventure, the 2k Sports Games, Soul Calibur, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online in very early 2001. The Fact that the launch of Shenmue, Crazy Taxi and Jet Grind Radio in a short amount of time hadn't affected sales much just shows that it really didn't matter anymore how much great games Sega released the consumers simply weren't interested in Sega consoles anymore.

Edit: Considering how much Money buying Bandei would have costed Sega in the short term I doubt they would have even been able to release the Dreamcast at all. Sega barley managed to get the funds together to even get the Dreamcast developed and released worldwide.
I can very well imagine that they didn't buy Bandei BECAUSE they wouldn't have been able to release another console if they did and that the decision for Sega was either buy Bandei or release a new console.

The dreamcast had a number of problems IIRC, they nerfed the GPU because of overheating instead of adding an additional cooler so it could only output 3 million polys/sec while the properly cooled arcade version went up to 10 million, enough to face the PS2 on better terms

But the real achilles heel was the fucking gdrom, on one side because it didnt prevent piracy at all and in the other because most ps2 sales at first were just normies who wanted a cheap dvd player as the ps2 launch lineup was pure dogshit and nobody was buying it for the games. It wasnt until over a year later that you had actual big games to justify buying one like gta3 or mgs2

They werent going to buy bandAi (not bandei) but merge as both companies were about the same in valuation and merges were all the rage in that era, see aol and timewarner

But my point is that with the extra money from bandai sega couldve kept the dreamcast alive enough to make it profitable, specially since by late 2000s it was already half the price of a ps2 or less
