Not Just Bikes / r/fuckcars / Urbanists / New Urbanism / Car-Free / Anti-Car - People and grifters who hate personal transport, freedom, cars, roads, suburbs, and are obsessed with city planning and urban design

to me the most interesting part about this is how efficient motorcycles are
sadly they have many of the same downsides as bicycles - can't fit cargo or passengers on them, suck balls in bad weather, and very dangerous (even minor accidents can maim or kill a motorcyclist)
And in my experience the people on mopeds (but not motorcycles) are the most reckless drivers there are. There's one guy on a moped I see almost every day going to work who drives that thing like a madman, weaving through traffic and cutting people off. He's nearly sideswiped me numerous times, and I've seen him do it to other cars too. One day that's gonna catch up to him.

"TRUCKS ARE SO EVIL AND POLLUTING AND INEFFICIENT BRO, YOU'VE GOTTA HAUL EVERYTHING YOU OWN TO THE TRAIN STATION TO TAKE IT ANYWHERE BRO"

Does this retard not realize that even when trains are used for shipping, trucks end up taking the various products and commodities they carry from the various train stations to their ultimate destination? You can't use public transport to ship all your belongings from one house to another when you move. You just can't. You would need to take dozens of trips, and after each one, your cargo just ends up at the train station of the bus stop, not your new house. Now what?

Trains won't work because there isn't a station in front of every house in the country you might move to. Public transport busses won't work because they are made and run in routes for transporting people, you're not going to be able to fit all your shit into one, and they also have the problem of not stopping at the actual destination. Besides, there's already a special kind of "bus" they make for transporting cargo.

It's called a truck.

No you wouldn´t. Because you'd quickly realize taking the car would get you from A to B a hell of a lot quicker.
pubic transport to pubic activities is often great when it works - park at a rail stop for free, pay $5 or whatever to ride the train right to the big game, no paying for parking, no real traffic issues.

when it works
Space-efficiency is very big for urbanists, probably because SimCity had a very limited amount of space, and density was rewarded. The whole space-efficiency contributes to "muh 15 minute city", which we've discussed some of the problems with, but it always assumes that moving up or down is a free action.
some buildings have elevators that suck so bad it's faster to take the stairs if you're on the lower floors; but that isn't considered part of "commute time" for some reason.
A really comfy video on how CSX essientially double tracked a section of railroad by building a really small clever rail section, also check out the channel the whole thing is super comfy.
njb and friends "induced demand, trust us, no need for proofs"

this railfan: "here is exactly what is done, and every single train I videoed, where they started, where they are coming from and where they are going, and what they are carrying"

This is actually the best way to take advantage of both systems. If you're going into the city to do some quick business and not carrying anything you can't hold in your arms. I admit public transport does have its place, I just hate the fuckcars people who are bent on forcing everyone to become a pedestrian indiscriminately.

I know a simple way to have him change his mind, "Ok retard if you're so confident in your idea I designate you as being responsible for moving all this shit. Load this fridge onto your bike and take it to the train station because I'm not putting up with that shit"

nobody in this thread, NOBODY, can hate someone like this faggot like the other poor plebs forced to be on the damn train with a faggot bringing a bike and a goddam fridge. Bitch likely to get stabbed.

The best part of this, fuck cars hates pedestrians, any time pedestrian infrastructure is posted they call it "carbrained", or declare it as car infrastructure. Njb and the fuck cars urbanist groups want high density unlivable environments, otherwise they'd be pushing for places to have more over/under foot paths.

I have been thinking, maybe we should stop thinking public transportation as replacement for a car and start thinking it as walking enhancement?

You can't really carry more stuff than and you always end up walking fairly significant amount to get a bus stop or train station. I think this might the better framing than trying get it do what a car does. Where does a public transport shine? Moving around a city center and between multiple centers. Basically places where you like to walk anyway because there are lost places you might want to pop in and has many pedestrians.

They can't tolerate things that merely make their own car-free lifestyle easier, unless those things are actively screwing over everyone else. A true sign of an ideolgical zealot whose opinions you should ignore.

I'm struggling to understand what is so dangerous about his old neighborhood that makes the new one safer? Less cares parked along the sidewalk? What, are the parked cars going to become sentient as you walk by them and ram into you at 100 MPH?

Sounds to me like this is another terminally online shut-in redditor.

I'm convinced judging from how most of these retards use trains as a solution that they think you can just lay miles and miles of track everywhere. Train tracks need a massive amount of maintenance for one thing, and most towns aren't going to like the idea of 50 tracks running through the town square to make a 'walkable' city.

Not to mention last time we had massive rail infrastructure projects we had Cheap Chinese, Irish, Italian, German and Ulster-Scottish labour.

I actually got to looking up his profile. It's actually hilarious when you imagine what someone might be like and it turns out to be true.

He is literally a Funko pop collecting faggot atheist redditor who lives with his parents. You cannot make this shit up :story:. I know we like to take the piss about this people for fun as a joke, but when the shoe just fits... I mean damn how much more on the nose can you get?

I don't blame people living with their parents in this day and age with the state of the housing market.

I'm 25 have a good job and still live with mine.

I was crossing the road to work today--there are signs telling the three lanes of traffic to yield for pedestrians, but as I was crossing the road, a pack of spandex cycloids pushed through the road. My timing was lucky enough to avoid a confrontation, but I still believe that they wouldn't have stopped or at least would've blamed me for a near-collision, despite them crying about cars are always the problem because "muh bigger vehicle".

My guy is literally the stereotypical reddit user. 100% he uses the "Wholesome 100 Big Chungus" meme, has some form of a neckbeard and weighs 300 pounds.

Basically places where you like to walk anyway because there are lost places you might want to pop in and has many pedestrians.
20th century science fiction writers already thought of that. They envisioned that public transport in the future would be a set of moving walkways that traveled at various speeds:
The short story "The Roads Must Roll" (1940), written by Robert A. Heinlein, depicts the risk of a transportation strike in a society based on similar-speed sidewalks. The novel is part of the Future History saga, and takes place in 1976. Isaac Asimov, in the novel The Caves of Steel (1954) and its sequels in the Robot series, uses similar enormous underground cities with a similar sidewalk system. The period described is about the year 5,000.

In each of these cases, there is a massive network of parallel moving belts, the inner ones moving faster. Passengers are screened from wind, and there are chairs and even shops on the belt. In the Heinlein work the fast lane runs at 100 mph (160 km/h), and the first "mechanical road" was built in 1960 between Cincinnati and Cleveland. The relative speed of two adjacent belts is 8.0 km/h (5 mph) (in the book, the fast lane stops while the second lane keeps running at 153 km/h (95 mph)). In the Wells and Asimov works there are more steps in the speed scale and the speeds are less extreme.

The sad thing is that old urbanists didn’t believe that trains and buses were the ultimate solution for moving people around in a dense area and proposed innovative ideas like multi-level roads, airships, Personal Rapid Transit, the aforementioned moving walkways, and more. They dreamed big and legitimately wanted to improve urban life, unlike today’s urbanists who hold up Kowloon Walled City as an example of “peak urbanism” and want you to live in the pod and own nothing.
