Is "Pharah being a lesbian" really shocking?

She's a bulldyke with a short hair trim. That being said I'm not sure why they even introduce characters dating eachother unless its a fire emblem game with a time skip feature and you get to make unit babies.
Pharah being a lesbian isn't shocking (or any of them).

It's shocking that literally Overwatch gets a pass when roughly half of the worldbuilding that exists in the game is tied to character's sexual orientations and it's jarring.

It's the year 2066 (ish) in OW - the idea that Pharah, a 32 year old professional soldier (from a family of soldiers) in a world that had a gigantic series of wars, would indulge in a schoolgirl crush on anyone.

I agree. It's sad that the concept had quite literally 'Marvel' levels of impact with a few cutscenes when it first came out into simply "oh so and so is gay?" story telling.

Instead of developing multiple timeline of happenings based on win/lose scenarios or furthering character story arcs and introducing new characters that are low hanging fruit. Like...for christ sake why is D.Va the only the mech pilot? Literally why when there are 4 other pilots from the same team and that would greatly increase the 'diversity' without trying to revamp the game lore.

That's what I'm saying, this was beyond obvious. Especially her having a thing for Mercy. Apparently they're going to keep teasing romance, if this video is any indication. Imagine the chaos if they actually go through with Gency after the revelation we just got about Pharah. :story:

Mercy reciprocating is pretty likely to be in Blizzard's pocket for a subsequent Pride Month or controversy. Pharah now is just the tease to stretch this out, but they may be accused of "queerbaiting" if they don't fulfill on the other half.

The Mercy-Genji pairing is probably now dead so that Mercy is at least left in a state of ambiguity, but when she does finally lez out, Blizzard will label her as bi to minimize the blatant retconning. I heard that the Mercy-Genji pairing was particularly favored by Michael Chu, him gone allowing for Blizzard to easily throw that out the window.

oh yes, "we believe in our values until it starts hurting our bottom line" speak. this is no different from the hong kong disaster.

speaking of Pharah being a carpet muncher, was she not having dinner with one of her male soldiers in one of the charismas comics? so it was nothing romantic about that huh?
The author of the comic said that was her dad.

EDIT, wanted to add my thoughts on pairing shit: I hope they go with Gency pairing because as far as Overwatch lore can go they have more of a fleshed out background meanwhile, Pharmercy solely relies "They can both fly" mechanic and fandom's over exaggerated flanderization of Pharah making her "Le rough stoic lesbo who's akshually spaghetties and is super submissive when she's a woman" trope which was ran to the ground by Tumblr and western media overall.

Chu had such a hard-on for Gency that he projected himself and his wife onto them. By contrast, I've heard that a lot of the newer staff are fans of Pharmercy, but can't vouch for the validity of that one.

Oh god damnit are we actually going to have a Shipper War? Those dumpster fires are always fun to watch, just for the sheer levels of autism produced.

This might wind up being more entertaining than actually playing this poorly balanced dumpster fire.

100% the devs care more about the shipping wars than the actual conflict in the game lore.

Lord forgive me, but I am too much familiar and autistic about this topic.

Jeff Kaplan at either Blizzcon 2017 or 2018 said that his favorite ships were Pharmercy and McHanzo, (which he totally was honest about and weren't words to get deranged yurifags and fujoshits to buy loot boxes, nope :optimistic:) resulted in constant slapfights between Gency and Pharmercy shippers, Pharmercy shippers used that as a gotcha against the former, constantly would write borderline psychotic posts about wanting Michael Chu dead or fired because according to them he was "pushing Gency" and overall were suffering from this sense of entitlement.

There were lots of community in-jokes in Overwatch community about how Michael Chu and Jeff Kaplan were at each other's throats because of their pairing preferences and the reason why there wasn't any lore back in OW1 days was because Jeff was keeping Chu in his basement so he doesn't write up any Gency stuff.

As for Chu's projecting on Gency, I would argue it could have been worse.
He could be like that one Riot employee who based an entire champion (the manic pixie quirky singer e-girl chink bait one that Riot larped on Twitter as to promote a 35$ skin) after his fiance, which later broke up with him lol.

Wait, the devs really resorted to making PharMercy canon to attract eyeballs away from whatever sex pest nonsense Blizzard is getting sued for, again?
lmfao, a meme game made by a meme studio.

I don't care what anyone officially working on Overwatch says, in my mind Hanzo Shimada has a wife and three kids who live in the suburbs and are constantly embarrassed by his weird larping.

I will fight people over this.

I miss when character relationships were implied, not officially canon. What is even the point of this?

In my mind, Mercy is an older woman that was in cryosleep to maintain her young image.

I will fight people over that.

Blizzard's actually an extremely toxic work environment and the studio keeps getting sued for sexual harrassment allegations by the legions of male feminists working there amid their token female hires.

These "We added LGBT content to Overwatch!" announcements eerily coincide with whenever a new lawsuit or media piece about how toxic the studio is hits the press. The assumption is it's an attempt to distract their fanbase.

I know Zarya and especially Moira have already been targets for remarks and jokes, but the notion of an existing character being "reworked" into a tranny is bonkers. Not quite unprecedented since that's exactly what the game Celeste did, but no less awful. If Blizard does such a "rework", maybe they'll just take the lazy "non-binary" route, especially on one of the robot characters.

Like the original big Blizzard sexual misconduct controversy, I suspect that much of this new report is overblown by crazy, power-tripping dangerhairs that staff the company.

It's quite fitting of their mentality. They want representation in EVERYTHING, yet have no problem supporting a toxic environment as long as they're "represented." I don't know about you, but I would not want to be represented by a foul corporation.

I think you're thinking about it the wrong way. It's not that they want representation in everything, and make private excuses when convenient. Instead, their public demeanor about wanting representation in everything was a front, cynically utilized to look better than they are, and the sexual misconduct-laden, toxic work environment is them being their real selves.

They're wolves in sheepskins predating upon the lambs.
