I think it's actually more likely that he got stopped doing something stupid or rear ended someone, and the truck was just impounded by the police, and if the leaser put a report on it, they are not likely to give it back, since Mexico does cooperate with the US on stolen cars.

I think it's actually more likely there's nothing wrong with the truck whatsoever, and it's a complete lie, just like how Rozy was extremely sick and miraculously recovered the next day the last time he needed to go to the airport. The truck is broken just like the merida airport 15 mins away is too expensive, just like the taxis don't take him to the airport, just like his credit cards aren't accepted in mexico, just like there's no buses or public transportation that goes to the airport. It's a lie, whether it has to do with being disinvited (which he had to beg to be invited in the first place), or he's just too fucked up to even function is up for debate.

Bus ride is too reliable, plus it possibly could be checked to make sure there was no mishaps. Now that he's renting a car, that gives him the privacy to make some shit up and blame it on the rental company.
