Any one else here play golf

The youtube algorithm started flooding me with Rick Shiels videos like 2 weeks ago to get me ready for golf season. Been hitting the range since then, working on controlling my low point and some short game. Definitely getting the itch to get back out there. LFG
The YouTube algorithm knew you needed to start working on your swing again

First time breaking 90 this season, let's go! 88, the most based score.
Congrats, beating 90 feels amazing.

Been going out for a while myself. Got upper to middle 80s this season from the middle tees but I went on a trip this weekend. Played 2 courses with over 7000 yards from the tips and tried it out from there. Shot a 102 and a 99 on those which is pretty impressive imo. The middle tips were like an 800+ yard difference so I think I played well. The killer with the tips is that your drive can be really good but that second shot into the green is the part that kills you. Anything above a 9 iron on these greens is guaranteed to roll off and even 9 irons might not stay. Was probably the most challenging and fun I had breaking 100 on the second course from the tips

I was today years old when I learned what course rating and slope means. In case you were wondering, this is what the course rating and slope looks like on a greens card

1686787874934.png

So a Course rating, the 76.8 number, is calculated based on what a scratch golfer would shoot. More specifically, if he/she played the round 50 times, took their 25 best rounds, and averaged them together. The slope rating is based on what the score a high handicap golfer would shoot in a round or what they call the Bogey Rating. This bogey rating deals with distance, accuracy, and obstacles that a scratch golfer wouldn't find troublesome. The average is 113.

Here's a good video explaining it

I will say, sometimes the really expensive golf courses are worth it. Went on a trip with a few golf buddies and played 6 really nice courses. Really enjoyed the experience of trying to break 100 from the tips on nice courses. So far I have done it on 4 out of the 6 courses

I'm more likely to give myself brain damage with a golf club than scoring a hole. So it's not even possible. My otherwise great life is hellish and this says a lot if I can't play golf. But when I was 8, I had my own golf clubs. I would've been a golfer if jews didn't steal my parent's money all the time through taxes. So we couldn't afford to be on course and had to spend time in Jewish engineering to become a man baby. But if I did play golf, I would turn into a man baby due to cruel unfortunate outcomes of sports with chocking since sport fans wear 5x more diapers than I do and have to flee to a place no one has heard me before due to defamation under my own fallacy.

You're either a player, a sports fan or a sports conisseur (meaning sperg in sports history).

Just go to a golf range and learn to hit the ball straight. Once you do that, you can go to cheap courses and play. You will have fun that way

I occasionally play on a nicer course when I can get my one friend and its definitely nice to play somewhere that bunkers have sand in instead of being just hard.

I've also switched to just focusing on my short game completely.
After taking a month break from the range though now I have to figure out why all my irons are going the same distance.

Also trying to get over my hatred of playing with randoms since my usual group cant play as much.

I last went out a month ago and shot poorly and was paired with some really bad randoms. I haven't been out since. I was shooting really nice too in the half dozen or so rounds I played, playing basically like a +12 handicap this year instead of 15-18. Probably get back out a few more times before summer is over but I spent like 4K on golf last summer between green's fees, booze on the course and buying a couple new clubs so I'm def not missing the lighter wallet. It is unfortunately a pretty expensive sport, even at the cheap courses.

Early morning tee times are a wonderful thing. The only ones who want to be out that early are in the same boat as you where they don't want to play with others and have a good pace of play. More likely than not though, you will be by yourself

Loving the fact that a lefty won the open and another lefty won the Barracuda Championship. Both on the same day.

A good lefty in golf is something to see( as a lefty myself). It honestly helps just see what others of my kind are doing for their game.

As for my game since I haven't posted here for a bit.

I'm starting to see where my strengths and weaknesses are in my game. My driving needs to be straightened out. My irons are actually my best part of my game with the chippin short game to boot. I get the yips with putting.

My plan is to get a bit more consistent. Especially with the driver. I want that thing set before I save up to get a fitting.

When my shekels are in order the plan is to get a fitting for my bag. I want a set of those Single Length Irons, the ones where you don't need to change your swing for every club. I want my game to have a consistency like that so I can attack the greens better y'know. I heard cobra makes some good sets.

Make sure you know you have a consistent and good swing. I went through 2 different instructors before I had my swing down enough to get club fitting. It's expensive to do but if you do get fitted clubs, its perfect.

Idk if that's the right move tbh. You want a different attack angle for shorter irons vs longer irons and getting them the same level will end up changing your swing

2024 season is here for us rough northmen. Spent the winter refining my swing. Glad to say my drive now goes around 260, which was the goal. I also got myself a 3 wood to add to my bag in situations that I would play from the tips. Still trying to figure out what to take out of the bag in situations when I do add the 3 wood.

Current stock yards (estimates)

Driver- 260
2 iron- 225
4 iron- 210
5 iron- 200
6 iron- 185
7 iron- 175
8 iron- 165
9 iron- 150
Full swing pitching wedge- 140
half swing pitching wedge- 130
48 degree wedge- 120
52 degree wedge- 110
56 degree wedge- 100
60 degree wedge- 90

3 wood- 240

My winter was spent trying to deconstruct my swing and has gone horribly. Also seems like this year is going to be me mainly using Irons to force myself into uncomfortable situations. Also nice that the course I mainly goto is basically finished changing the front 9, Just still no usable bunkers :cryblood:

Also found that playing the hole vs playing the course has done tremendous for me. of the quick 9 holes i played last week I made par on 3 holes.

I think I had one of the most productive range sessions in my life. I always went in either trying to work on understanding what my range with each club is or focusing on accuracy. Spending the entire time just working with long pitch shots and chips shots. Enough of the courses I play have par 3s that are either under 80 yards or play like it and I think that may be my best bet in trying to bring my score down.

One of the things I now do at ranges thats helped me out is to hit my clubs shorter than they should to work on control and form. After hitting my long irons, fairway woods, and driver, I spent about 30 golf balls hitting my 9 iron (150 club) to targets that were 110 and 90 yards away and my 7 iron (180 club) to 150 and 120 yard targets. At some point I am going to work on drawing and fading the ball but for now, the distance control is so helpful

It's been a while since I posted here.

The big update is that as a birthday present, my family got me a golf instructor. I know it may not be affordable for everyone to do it. But I would highly recommend it if you wish to start playing at a more consistent ability. The instructor himself is sharp and knows his shit. Because of this, I have been able to hit more consistently (I still have a lot to go over) however I have seen big improvements in my game. During one of my lessons, I was able to sink a 40-foot putt!
I have been able to hit the links a fair amount, I usually try to get a round in every other week. I am truly starting to love this sport besides just being an avid recreational player. Now I do not want to go pro, since that will never happen. However, I want to get good enough so that I can win a local league. Since that's at least achievable. I hit my drives far when I have nice contact, my hybrids and irons are solid but can fall apart if I'm not having a good day, and my putts are getting more accurate. That's still to say that I do need to work if I want to achieve a nice low handicap.
The courses around me are very solid some good public ones with some privates scattered about. I have to say this I love this sport.

Wild ass idea, how logistically possible would a Kiwi Farms Open would be? Now this is completely hypothetical. Not to mention we would have to select a course for this to happen. But I just want to put this out here so other Kiwis can react to this.

It sounds like a decent idea but I doubt it would happen. There probably isn't many kiwi's who golf and of those that do, you would have to find a course and time for all of them to meet up. Just keep it simple and keep improving while playing local. The golf instructor you have is helping a lot. Now just try to improve your handicap and go from there

I'm a lefty, a righty in literally everything else and right eye dominant, so it warms my heart to see lefties win.

I recently got back into playing after a trip to see my Dad and Uncle in Myrtle. We did 54 holes in three days and it was amazing. I'm rusty as hell but I've got the bug again. It was around my bday so they got me a new driver and I got an Odyssey putter at the PGA store. Been going to the range daily. Got a new bag and a ton of balls.

Today I found out my old irons I bought second hand at Fort Bragg in 2014 are unique. They are marked 731 PM which stands for Phil Mickelson. He did a collaboration with Titleist. Eventually if my game gets good enough I'll get new ones but I'm holding onto these.

Does anyone know a national place that does deep club refurbs? Mine aren't destroyed or damaged. Just scuffed. I'd like them polished up and restored, I know it won't make me play better but hey. I took it to a local guy today but he said he couldn't do much. Any thoughts would be appreciated and happy golfing.
