Favourite "Old Internet" stuff - Let's reminisce about the Wild West days

An absolutely archaic forum I know of, dating to the early 2000s, not only moved to Discord, but also somehow promoted a bunch of underage trans DID-roleplayers to moderation positions who proceeded to ban the majority of the core members of the old userbase. They then invited a whole army of queers who do nothing but chat about fag issues and the original subject of the forum is largely forgotten.
I swear, trannies are the termites of the internet. If you don't keep them at bay 24/7, they just show up out of nowhere and eat away until there's nothing left.

It happens whenever they find a place with an easy-going and chill attitude that is lax on moderation.

Random gimmick posters showing up and spamming reaction gifs and trying to act cute should be your first early warning sign.

The internet as a whole feels less functional than when it did in the old pioneering days. Services like Like365 seemed interesting for online music streaming, and then you had things like the superior way to share music, AudioGalaxy... Remember when Last.fm was a thing? Now nobody uses it. Some things like Livejournal and alternatives eventually were rightfully pushed back upon, and to an lesser extent Tumblr, but to me it kind of just feels like a general regression. I don't really find it all that usable. Right now there seems to be some big shit going down with websites like youtube...

Neopets had forums (websites having general forums was a thing) and it was crawling with pedophiles.
I'm guessing you knew about the incident with a pedophile named Toby Studebaker? People who were around at the time suspect that whole thing is why the General Chat board got shut down. Neo, for obvious reasons, didn't come out and say "Hey so we have a pedophile problem"; iirc they blamed it on some in-universe character destroying it.

No, I don't know that at all. Just being a kid and browsing the neopets forum it was obviously gross old men, and even a few tried to message me. It truly was a huge spot for pedophiles and it was part of why I stopped using that site.

Real life, too. I've seen it myself in other things. It's crazy how gross and destructive they are. It's a cult.

Disagree, they thrive on places with strict but inconsistent moderation like SomethingAwful did where they or their friends can get into power and then use the rules for themselves. They can't handle being placed where people will call them out and won't have their posts deleted.

I go back to Gaia Online from time to time when I have nothing to do. The site kept some old things from the mid 2000s. I used to visit the forums there, made some online friends.
You get an avatar that you can customize with clothes that you have to buy, like on Neopets. I still can't understand how the site's "economy" has a hyperinflation similar to Venezuela's.

There were in-game items added to the game that literally only existed to generate massive amounts of gaia gold. You bought them with Gaia cash (premium currency) and then you’d basically have infinite gold forever. A lot of people ended up with more Gaia gold than they could ever spend, and the currency started hyperinflating. There weren’t enough things to sink that extra gold into to offset the sheer amount of it. And because the admins were retarded they kept making more gold generators for years because they cost premium currency so it’s easy IRL dollarydoos for them too.

I really miss the look and humor of the early web. Sure the speeds were slow, but pages were primarily text and images with animated gifs being the most complex thing. I still remember my first experience was at a community college library. Somebody fired up Netscape Navigator and I think I was on there for like 5 hours. I downloaded stupid shit like Jolly Roger's "Anarchist Cookbook" and Transformers and He-Man fanfic (not the shit that would be called fanfic today, just satire or basically long shit posts).

I miss the animation style of 70's/80's cartoons like G.I. Joe, Flash Gordon, Transformers, etc.. You know when people were drawn to look like...people. Cartoons nowadays look like they were all shat of some Cal Arts studen's ass.

GET OFF MY LAWN!

Elouai is my favorite pixel art games site. Sadly the site no longer exists anymore. I followed the site owner's twitter for a few years and it looks like he's not planning to revive it. He never mentions the site ever. kinda funny when you see so much seethe tumblr retards who saw his twitter.

Does anyone else remember weebles-stuff.com? This was the guy who created Badger Badger Badger and a bunch of other hugely popular flash animations. Weirdly enough this British guy making silly, "lol so random XD" flash animation is directly responsible for me finding the Farms because back in the mid 2000's he had a small "random-link-of-the-day" section on the website where he or others would submit stuff they found interesting. It was there that I found ED, which in turn lead me to 4chan, and years later the CWCki and the Farms.

Have lately been remembering the good old days of mocking badly written fanfiction ("sporking" - peak 2000s randumb humour right there), there was one particular forum I enjoyed reading. Can't recall what the site was called but there was this one writer whose stories got featured multiple times, and a member on the forum who did a great job with the commentary - I believe the stories by that particular author were mostly Pokemon related, badly written rule 34, and the commentary this one guy added was always gold. Wish I could dig up an archive, it was very entertaining, had managed to slip under the radar of the school's filters too so I spent many a lunchtime reading through it on the library computers.

Similarly there was this website, Twilight Sucks, devoted to shitting on the Twilight books/movies which I also got a kick out of back in the day.

Anime in three parts on youtube
i remember when people would upload fake episodes of anime and it would just be troll bait, some curse shit or just straight up gore and porn. speaking of porn, i saw video of spoony reviwing final fantasy 8 and it straight up have hentai in the video. its been up for four years now.

I remember this site called Kind of Crap, which was where a guy called Galvin who chronicled his experiences while living overseas in Japan.

It had it's own forum too, with perhaps a couple of dozen users, really crazy fun, like a mini Kiwi Farms.

Does anyone remember "G Major"? Not the key and scale in music making but like, this weird trend back in the day where people would take an audio file, pitch it up and down a bit and layer them all together with footage that has negative colors to it.
I have no idea why this was ever a thing or why a lot of people did this, but it's cemented itself into old 'net culture and it's just one of those things I look back on and think "oh yeah, that was a thing."

Microsoft really fucked up by letting messenger die, its by far the most popular web service they ever made.

The team behind this is or at least was working on an AIM revival.

Also someone has to know what I'm talking about, what's that one ancient "WELCOME TO MY PAGE!" website with the terrible layout like it was someone's middle school project?
http://www.themostamazingwebsiteontheinternet.com/ could possibly be what you're looking for. I thought about this site in the car the other day and chuckled, thanks for bringing it up.

This isn't THAT old, but did anybody else enjoy i-mockery.com? Thankfully the site is still around although it is pretty much frozen in time now. That site (and a preloaded version of NesterDC for the Dreamcast) first introduced me to the ROM hacks scene. Like the real ROM hacks; Super KKK Bros, Trans Tramps, Lesbian Tennis, Donner Party, etc.. Also the Comics section is gold. Actually, there is so much great comedy on that site that it hurts my brain to think about modern web now. *sigh*
