This is such a perfect distillation of Patrick's psychology. I've always found it so fascinating how in denial he is of reality. He is such a vain creature that wastes all of his time going for some moronic surface level aesthetic—what he wants people to see him as—without once considering the substance of character he needs to actually be that. A no-nonsense judge would be more likely to refuse to engage at all in such a situation and instead say (in professional language, of course) "shut the fuck up", and if one decides to view that as escalating the dispute rather than a sign to STFU, it's an easy way to be held in contempt.

If he's smart, he would have an attorney present at the hearing, not to actually provide competent legal representation (which obviously would help too) but to calm him down in the event the judge says or does something he dislikes.

Rick has a massive chip on his shoulder and can’t let the stalkers win, as he said before. He doesn’t want to correct them out of fear of other people believing what they say is true. He also only seems to be obsessed with doing this to whatever he deems a stalker, and does it because he wants to “correct the record.” If he was obsessed with clearing his name and trying to keep a squeaky clean record, I think he would be doing a much better job at it. OCD makes you want to do things out of fear, not malice.

While it’s certainly an obsession ruining his life it seems more of an ego bruising than any actual short circuit in his brain. He can stop whenever he wants, he’s just an asshole and won’t. What I’m getting at is Rick is very fat, by every medical standard.

As I previously pointed out, he doesn’t appear to be actually developmentally different, just not especially smart.

If he was simply thick however, then he really wouldn’t have achieved what he has managed.

So while there is potential for a learning disorder or some kind of mental health issue, he is not a full on special case.

I seriously think that some kind of repressed homosexuality underlies Rick's behavior. He may have a kid but a lot of fruity dudes get gayer as they get older (or maybe they just get more honest), and the way Patrick interacts with the stalker childs makes it seem like he almost enjoys the teasing.
He might not necessarily admit it to himself after the fact, but he clearly isn't scoring some kind of victory by responding, he apparently does it just because he enjoys it. He wouldn't respond at all if he didn't, it's like he's egging them on to keep texting him.

Obviously there's more to whatever Rick's got going on, but the internal conflict caused by his constant attempts to suppress and deny his own womanly tendencies is very apparent.

I've not read a single one of Pat's 'contributions' to speculative fiction but this character trait of his suggests to me that he will never be able to write a compelling conflict where each side considers the other a "trusted enemy". I know that the SWATTings have slowed recently, but I have some thoughts: let's say that Pat doesn't show up for court and Sosnay issues a warrant for contempt.

1. If we don't see any SWATTings*** for the rest of the year, this implies most of not all of them were done by Pat in some way.

2. Won't take long before Mr. Enjoy Prison becomes Mr. Enjoy County because whoever is actually doing the SWATTings will start back up again full throttle in the hopes they drag him away in cuffs.
