Pikmin thread

One of my favorite things about this series is the creature designs, in particular the bosses, and so I decided to see both the new beasties and which of the old ones made the cut into the roster:

My favorite thing about this is that they brought back all the bosses from the first two games. Seeing my boys The Smoky Progg & The Waterwraith in HD is just
pacha emperor's new groove just right meme.jpeg

God bless the developers, they did a fantastic job on this game.

I'm not 100% through the game but I'd say I'm about 70-75% and I'm utterly gobsmacked by the love and care utterly poured into this game, I'm so happy to see people talking about it and it getting attention + the game just being an overall love letter to the entire fan base after being so passionate and patient for this game genuine 10/10 for me, love this game to bits so far

So fellas, since the game has been out for about a week officially and about 2 weeks unofficially, what your thoughts? I'm curious
It's good. Real good. Too soon for me to place it, but I've 100% it already. The first few areas made me think it was going to baby easy with a few hurdles, later areas proved that wrong. Hell even the last dungeon can be a slaughter house and the last boss is tough even with the rewind feature.
Story, standard. I'm fine with it. Louie, bastard. It's weird the Koppites are not the ones from Pikmin 3. The story is sorta a reboot, but I swear Olimar has a line saying he's been to Earth before.
Lots of content. I could've seen them cutting Olimar's content and the Sage Leafling's trials and selling them as DLC but appreciate that they are here.
Night mode was fun. I never used Dingo because fuck that guy. I was at least amused by the other rescue officers. There is alot of dialogue here, but after playing Pikmin 2 there just as much as that game. I wish the last item you get wasn't the line up feature.
I liked the incorporation of the Dandori battles and challenges. Some of the new enemies are great I like the Disco Long Legs and the Watermelon Elephant, while some are just meh. I didn't use many items until the last dungeon, but I'm curious to see how fans will make challenges out of this game.

Almost completed the game, it's as fun as Pikmin can get. It's not perfect (I'll get into that once I completed the game) but it's about right up there with the other three.

I just got it and want to play some Pikmin action, but there's cutscenes every 5 seconds which I'm skipping through. I wish Nintendo stopped that bullshit 'take control from the player to show them something' handholding.

Peak Gaming and a huge step up from Pikmin 3 imo. 100%'d it (minus the Olimar section because my emulator kept crashing at that part) and it was comfy as hell. Took me about 30 hours which I wasn't expecting looking at the short length of the other games. The game desperately needs like a NG+ or a Hard Mode Minus the fucking olimar section. because you get so much cool neat shit in the "postgame" of Pikmin 4 that it'd be cool to stomp the earlier parts of the game with a harder difficulty.

You're missing out on the hardest content in the game by not doing the Olimar stuff.

Edit: It's something you unlock after

Yeah I really hope Ryujinx or Yuzu fixes the issues with the Olimar part because it just boots me to character creation. Weird glitch.

Loving Pikmin 4. So far its becoming the is the Switch game of the year over Zelda TOTK.
I, too, believe that a fourth installment like Pikmin is going to be the true test to see the difference between real gamers and casuals. Rarely do I ever use this word since the Pikmin series is as mainstream as you can get, but currently this game reminds me of the popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in the sense of how replay-able it is, and not to mention the adaptability it comes with how much of a legacy it showed has when compared to the last three.

Either way, until Super Mario Wonder comes out, this game looks really good.

Ok so I beat it about two weeks ago and here is what I can say:

  1. Out of all the Pikmin games it is the longest one. To the point that unlike the previous games this one seems to be designed with anti-speed running in mind.
  2. The enemies don't respawn on the surface ever. Don't know how to feel about that.
  3. This game more than any of the other Pikmin sequels is actively trying to go after the complete opposite tone as the first Pikmin game. While the first Pikmin game put in as much care to give you the feel of being isolated on this nerve raking but also serene planet with only the Pikmin to help you, in this new game puts a lot of emphasis on the castaways in how you are all in this together in one happy community. It's neither good or bad it's just.... Different.
  4. As a heads up, it is very difficult to defeat the final boss without yellow Pikmin. The electricity phase is the must frustrating part. Luckily there is a Yellow candypop bud on the second to last level of the last cave in the game.
  5. Shepard isn't a strong independent whamman of color, she actually only exists to upgrade Oatchi and to make the player character look better.
  6. Louie is unambiguously the villain and is border line almost evil.
  7. The game sorta implies that it takes place in an alternate continuity where Olimar crash lands in a different place on the planet but it has also has things like Olimar recognizing White and Purple Pikmin which is confusing.
  8. All of these people crash lands on the Pikmin planet but it's never explained what is causes this phenonium other then they all just so happens to hit an asteroid.
  9. Really Nintendo you couldn't remix or bring back the Piklopedia theme from Pikmin 2.
So let's talk about the bad:
  1. The tutorial is super slow.
  2. The game starts off super easy even by Pikmin standards and it only ever starts to become difficult when your about half way done with the game.
  3. The game insists on holding the hand of the player with things like the auto aim with no option on turning it off. It unintentionally makes fighting certain enemies difficult when they are in a group with smaller enemies like Bulbears.
  4. The other captains butt in every single time a pikmin dies and it kills any personal emotion from the player.
  5. A minor but groan worthy nitpick is whenever the characters refer to the leaflings individually they always refer to them in gender neutral language.
  6. Really game? No one personally connected to Olimar other than Louie came looking for him like his family?
  7. The early game Pikmin limits are ok here but I hope they don't return in future instalments.
  8. Olimar sorta gets the Jake Skywalker treatment as mentioned in this thread. It's not close to as bad as it is with other characters from other franchises but still.
  9. The game's anti-speed running design also hinders it's replayablity.

And finally The good:

  1. Pikmin is finally back and it's well worth the wait.
  2. The treasures here are pretty good. Especially the music box ones that play old nintendo music. But please try something different next time.
  3. Ice Pikmin don't necessarily take away from the Blue Pikmin from what hasn't already been taken away from them from Wing Pikmin (which are rare in this game before you'd find there onion) and Oatchi. Blue Pikmin are still neccessary for deep water stuff.
  4. The level designs are pretty good. I really like the beach level.
  5. Purple Pikmin are as buffed as they were in Pikmin 2.
  6. Like I said before Oatchi is adorable. Moss is also a good doggie. And the final boos after you defeat it and Louie
  7. The Sage Leafling hole is the best part of the game. I like how the Purple Onion level encourages you to think outside of the box.
  8. The parts where you play as Olimar is as good as the game gets. It's kind of a reboot of Pikmin 1, Wish he will be the main character again in the next game. It doesn't redeem what the rest of the story does to him.
  9. Holy hell that was a good final boss.
  10. The other bosses are a highlight too like the Groovy Long Legs.
  11. Piklopedia and Treasure horde are back. Some of Olimar and Louie's notes are reused from Pikmin 2 but the ones on the new creatures feel the same in tone. I really like Louie's new notes on the treasures.
  12. There is a lot of lore and continuity references to obscure facts from the previous games that feels like there is someone at nintendo that does care for those thing. It's very appreciating of that fact.
  13. Some of the new enemies are challenging if you don't know what your doing. Luckily Piklopedia has a mode that can help you practice.
  14. Night missions are in the game enough that they are satisfying but doesn't overstay their welcome.
  15. The dandori challenges/ battles are very satisfyingly and is a highlight.
Overall the game is a mix bag of the best and worst of Pikmin all in one, I would say the good far outweighs the bad but it's not perfect. It's hard to place this game compared to the others. It's well worth the wait hopefully the next one doesn't take a decade to be made.
