Western Doctrine to a situation like this would have been mass air attacks, probably with napalm. Burn everything out, everything down, and drive your armor with their mechanized infantry support through the ashes. Ukraine is missing the Air Force and armor to make that work. They might still have the mechanized power, but we've got recent example of what happens when a column of mechanized conscripts finds a Russian tank and its friends.

There are other reasons but the treaty of Aigun (1858 ) and Russian interference with the non Russian portions of Manchuria, Mongolia (Which the ROC still claim), and history of border conflict.

The power balance has more or less inverted from the early 20th (or even the 2010s) now. There's a shit ton of Russian/Belarusian women marrying Chinesemen and settling in China from what I've seen alongside many more cases of their educated folks getting permanent residency (a notoriously hard thing, think of it like lottery with a voodo magic ritual) than before.

For comparison, Americans and Germans are considered the "best of the worst" by most today. Mainly because Germany lost the Great war and basically fucked out of Tsingdao, the US never "technically" owned land in the treaty ports (because they judged it to be disadvantageous) alongside banning consular protection for opium dealers.

Funnily enough all the chinese exchange students I talked to in Germany were absolutely horrified by what happened in the country from 2015 onwards. I would go as far as to say they generally pity Germans nowadays. It also helps that the German government is playing both sides and really doesn't want to confront China on any front.
