Just because you put them over your shoulders doesn't mean the serve the same function.

A real race harness will be made from some form of woven nylon, they'll be tested inspected and SFI certified to keep your ass in the seat even if you put the car greasy side up, and they cost more than double what Chance has earned in his entire life. Not only that, but you can only use them for X amount of time before their certification runs out, which can be 2-5 years depending on what you buy.

After that time runs out you have to throw them away and buy a new harness. Even if they just sat in their box and never saw the light of day for that entire time, you still can't use them. Try going onto a track with an expired harness and the tech inspectors will stop you dead in your tracks long before any rubber touches the track surface.

Sometimes you can send them back in to get reinspected tested and certified, but this will cost you almost as much as a brand new harness and the certification will only be for another year.

And this is just on the amateur level, and they're that anal about it because they get dipshit twats like Chance showing up wanting to cosplay as Cole Trickle. Their "roll cage" is made from old fence posts and bits of a trampoline, their harness is made for parasailing, and their suit is a NO FEAR tshirt.

I really truly wish I was making that part up, but I've actually seen it done and it's disturbing that people are willing to quarter-ass it and put their lives on the line just to save a few bucks. If you're driving a 3,000lb vehicle at 90mph and hit something hard, you won't have time to regret not building it out of DOM and making sure everything is welded in correctly, you'll just be fucking dead.
