idk if some our resident detransitioners can comment but this does seem to be more or less accurate from what I've observed.
This is a compelling explanation. I dunno if it's strictly true though. Probably for the old-fashioned crossdresser types, but they don't make up the majority of fetishists anymore. IMO, many modern cases of autogynephilia stem not from dissociation, but instead early porn exposure messing with the troon's developing identity.
Adolescents (and autistic people) have an underdeveloped theory of mind; that is, the ability to differentiate between one's own mental state and the thoughts and feelings of others. Exposure to sexual content at this stage while their sense of self is still maturing seriously messes shit up, because they can't yet distinguish between "I'm attracted to this person" and "I want to be this person". The detached nature of porn makes it possible for the viewer to imagine themselves AS the object of attraction rather than actually inserting themselves into the scenario - young people, who have a tendency to project themselves onto others, will do this naturally.
This stuff is incredibly addictive, even for adults. Adolescents with less impulse control will undoubtedly come back to it again and again, strengthening that part of their "identity" until they begin picturing themselves as the opposite sex. Trying on a bunch of different identities until you eventually get sick of them is a natural part of growing up. But porn is something you never get sick of.
This explains a lot about troons, I feel. Their sexualised view of women. Their tendency towards even more depraved fetishes. Their reliance on quick dopamine hits via cooming and/or consooming. Most people eventually grow up and move past that teenage identity confusion stage, but not them. As long as they avoid coming to terms with reality in favour of chasing some pornsick fantasy, they'll forever remain in that immature self-centred state of mind.
All the AGP/AAP trannies I've had the displeasure of speaking to have been consuming sexual content from a shockingly young age. Where normal adolescents are shaped by the people they talk to and the media they consume, these guys build their identity around porn and it screws them up for the rest of their lives.
