No aliens or xenos, no cyborgs or androids, weapons are ballistic only, no energy weapons or whacky stuff.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I generally think pulpy high concept stuff is more fun and engaging than pseudo realism.

I'm sure there's a way to make hard scifi boring space full of dusty rocks with grounded technology into a fun game but I'm even more sure Bethesda are not the company to do it

This is just Bethesda being lazy, we already have extremely rudimentary cyborgs and androids in the modern day, imagine on the distant future. Bethesda just didn't wanted to design and deal with the implications of it in the setting or gameplay

they're probably not mentioning it out of story spoilers but apparently you get alien superpowers similar to how you acquire Shouts in Skyrim.

one of the trailers showed this when the protag used some mass zero gravity ability at the very end to throw a group of enemies into the air.

On the flip side, writers are almost always too incompetent to make aliens more than just green humans, and the fantasy elements outweigh the science so much that it might aswell be pure fantasy.
Do you really want Bethesda's shit writers take on alien racism or robot rights? The more grounded, the less the can fuck up.

It has a hard sci fi coat of paint while neglecting all of the grungy and inconvenient bits that make hard sci fi "hard." Leaning into those would probably make the game too survival-y and the average bethesda gamer can't even really handle hunger/hydration/sleep meters. Dumb stuff like that obviously isn't necessary but something like, say, losing your navigation/comms because your ship without a deflector but with a warp engine zipped through some debris, and now you have to spacewalk and fix that shit might be neat but bethesda couldn't to that correctly even if they tried. You can't get yourself stranded, there's no scarcity, there are no inherent risks associated with space, etc etc.

Not only that but I don't think it would be fun to play. I mean look at Scam Citizen, a checklist just to get up from the pilot seat.

It's looking like past the initial 20 hours the exploration is the worst part of the game despite todd and co marketing the game as being heavy in exploration. I've heard the story and factions are actually decent. I guess we will all find out for sure tomorrow.

On a more serious note, if they did reveal this somewhere they clearly didn't do it directly because you can see based on the reactions of the people in the comments that most didn't know about such strong limitation

I was interested in getting this game ..potentially early even. But from what I've seen it's a handicapped 'spaceship sim' which has many games to choose from like Everspace 2, Battle for Atlas, Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen etc. With you relying on a shooter/Fallout 4 gameplay with a somewhat 'branching story' but I have to imagine the story branching falls short just like every other 'story branching' falls short outside of CRPG styled games.

I do care about misleading market actually, one because it is part of my job suing companies that do it, second because gaming companies that do this shit are one of the reasons gaming is in a downward spiral and I care about my hobby.

It is clearly that Bethesda tried to sell their game as being above and beyond what their game is capable off because Microsoft needs a savior. If this is bad enough, who knows perhaps I got my next lawsuit ready.

I do not have a hate boner for Bethesda either, I dislike any company that lies about their games like Bethesda does, they started doing this a bit with Skyrim but really became their M.O with Fallout 4... "It just works"
