I guarantee you I could build an AR that would get 95% the performance of a fully kitted-out WWSD, for half the price. If that much.
I did exactly that, actually. KP-15 lower ($80 preorder price), Aero upper, BCG and 12" Atlas hg, Faxon pencil barrel, Hiperfire DMR trigger, JPE buffer. Might have been $750 all-in before optics and is still under 6# with a 25mm dot and accessories. Feels like a toy, but is super handy.

Just posting this, because I think the 5.7 is a really nice option and he compares them. I wonder if they'll ever make any more compact 5.7's that would be easier to carry. I assume the main problem would the round depends on velocity so much that shorter barrels would reduce effectiveness.

I really like the S&W 5.7.

So not to be a dick or start an argument, but why? What about 5.7 appeals to you over other cartridges and for what purpose?

Genuine curiosity, I don't particularly see the point of it but I'm willing to listen.

Just speaking for myself the capacity Vs even 9mm makes it interesting. Don't have one yet, but I've been thinking about getting one. From what I've seen the velocity is enough to make the terminal performance in line with 9mm.

There's no practical reason whatsoever to CC a 5.7 but people do it anyway.

I'm not passionate about .5.7 for sure, it's just something I'd consider. The main reasons are capacity and better against soft armor with FMJ. My favorite round is 357 Sig more or less and it's too bad that wasn't more successful. 9mm +P, .45, 357 Sig are all fairly close imo.

I think a 5.7 full size like the M&P with over 20 rounds ready would be a good home defense pistol.

I've only held an FN 5/7 and it was alright I guess. Too big for me to carry. Anything bigger than G19/P229 is too big to me. I hear low recoil is another advantage, but I haven't fired one.

Why do you think a round designed to penetrate armor, that will go through drywall like nothing, will make a good home defense round? I'm seriously asking for your reasoning.

I think 00 9-15 pellet is best for home too, and that'll go through a lot of drywall. 9mm JHP will go through a bit too and likely clog. It's not a big concern of mine. If it was I'd probably stick to birdshot.

I specifically like the M&P for a bedside gun, in theory, because I like the idea of a manual safety and chambered for one with high capacity. The P320 also does well on those too. I don't have either, but I'd consider them as good options.

ETA: To make it clear, I am not dogmatic on gun/caliber choice. There are plenty of options, needs, and plain old personal preference. I do not want a manual safety on anything I carry as long as it's in a good holster, but a house gun that you move around a bit might be an ok to have a safety if chambered.

I am dogmatic about gun rights in general. And I'd highly recommend carrying, and using a drop safe modern pistol chambered without a safety. Seen too many cases of CCWs pulling and not getting a shot off in time because they after to chamber or miss the safety. Just be sure you get a well-made leather (I like Kramer leather) or Kydex.
