Josh, I have a theory.

The reason Drexel is so shockingly insecure when you talk about him is not necessarily because what he's saying is untrue to varying degrees, but because what he is boasting about is inherently immoral. Especially with homosexuals, the mentally ill, and mentally ill homosexuals.

Such fornication is an affront to God and shame is a natural response to offending our Lord. Drexel relies on a constant supply of affirmation from Nick and guys who idolize serial fornicators to distract from and suppress that shame. Intrinsic to that supply of affirmation is the implicit notion that those who are not prolific fornicators are inherently inferior to him and those like him. Furthermore by this logic all such men boast about their sinful sexual conquests, and those who don't boast only do so because they are not getting any box to smash.

As a result of this conflation of factors, an "inferior" man such as yourself, who does not boast and thus isn't getting any, criticizing him pierces right through his shield of affirmation and strikes him in the source of his shame. He is unable to simply laugh it off or ignore it because deep down he knows its wrong. His actions are so prolific that he has surely amassed an immense amount of repressed shame.

It really makes me wonder what degree of personal hell Drexel must experience when he is left alone with his thoughts and I suspect that is why he compulsively chases flesh and affirmation.
