Finally loaded up current world in Legends Viewer and have pretty much the full story now. Capital has been at war with goblin civ and they lost three monarchs in a siege.

The goblins returned in 251 and 252, the latter fight killing the King. I think by that point the civ was sick and tired of losing four monarchs so quickly and decided to seek a new ruler elsewhere.

It doesn't end there for Domas though. The interesting thing to note about Oiledflag is that it has a significant elf population. I'd be annoyed by this if it weren't for the fact that they literally dropped everything they were doing and joined the fight. Lots of them died, but the average kill count was about 8 to 10 gobbos, which took out a decent chunk of the siege. Domas's old mentor was among them and took out 8 before going down herself.

Domas joined my fort just before Eliye died. I imagine that must've hit her pretty damn hard considering they were friends for almost 20 years. Both of her kids died during the siege too and what's even worse is her grandkids have become necromancers and have been banished from the civilization. I suppose it makes total sense that she'd step up to the plate after losing so much. I'm a fan of her now.

I've actually had an elf king once, but it was before I was big on digging into Legends so I have no idea how it happened. He was a super badass and pretty much an honorary dorf though.

On a side note the past few forts I've made have had the first tree immediately crush the woodcutter. For the rest of the fort it never happens again.

God I hate that. Mercy? None to be found here...
RIP to your woodcutter.

I once deconstructed the wagon you start with after digging the hole to dump all the contents of it into it (it was a seriously evil biome with thralling clouds) and the logs from the wagon killed the guy digging out the original hole. His head exploded.

Despite having dealt with a bronze colossus, this fortress's first death is a fucking baby getting obliterated by its mother somehow dropping a solid stone door on top of it in the middle of a hauling job.

I have hatches over ramps right where this happened, so I'm guessing the dwarf had to drop it to open the hatch which somehow caused it to fall on top of the two of them when she went down.

Getting killed as a baby by a falling door is such a total dwarf fortress death.

I love that the door actually gets credited with the kill. I hope you figure out some way to get a dwarf to wield it as a weapon so it can get more kills.

At least a door squashing your head makes sense - I lost a dwarf because it fought some fucking snails once.

I once lost half my starting party to falling logs from the wagon that I deconstructed.

When I played this for the first time it was still 2D and you had to dig deeper and deeper to the right. The 3D version was mindblowing and I was pretty sure in a few years the indie market would be swamped with games like this. Now there's rimworld and ???. It somehow never happened.

Most people are too smoothbrained for a game where you practically need a Ph.D. in playing the game just to be a rank noob.

Poor interface is probably the biggest barrier to entry, plenty of normies picked up the game without much issue once the steam version came out
Problem is they suck at it. People need that ASCII-tier ancient nethack like interface to bust a groove.

This. Most LPs I see of the game nowadays are by normie youtubers who do shit like "I survived 10 YEARS in Dwarf Fortress here's what happened!" with the Steam version. Even the forums are flooded with them. It's dogshit.

I was playing dwarf fortress and in 5 minutes my woodcutter cut down a tree next to a lake, dodged out the way of a log then drowned in the fucking lake.

For some reason my fisher kept wanting to fish there for turtles so slowly became depressed as they watched their friend rot away in front of them.

Meanwhile I noticed they were dead about half a year later when their ghost appeared.

Part of the emergent gameplay of DF is finding out about these things after they've already happened. Some dwarf goes insane and you find out it was all somehow your fault.

Surviving is the easiest thing ever. Just turtle up. No caravans, no caverns, no connection to the outside world. Unless you are in an insane biome, you can exist forever.
