Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Recently, a nullptr::live tranny (adjacent to our good friend Hector Martin/Asahi Lina) "Luna Fox" sperged out about the project not having a CoC

Drew's created his guide to how to enforce codes of conduct: https://mirror.drewdevault.com/conduct-qrh.pdf, https://archive.ph/38jEJ
This is the first thing in the document lol:

And it already comes with an unclear caveat for which there are no codes:

Has Null ever given us Kiwi Farmers directions on what to do in case of a fire?

I generally agree with this sentiment. There is something attractive about the minimal, no-frills, old school style of web app. But surely you've seen Drew's extended rant "On the subject of ethics in our industry" where he makes official what kind of people are not welcome to use his service:

Like I mentioned above, notice how few of these things are clearly defined. For example, "the democratic process", "the judicial process", "rights", "disabilities", "economic classes" are all impossibly vague even in a colloquial sense. How can I know if someone is "speaking up in support of these ideals" or "recognizes and embodies these truths"? Just to pick the first two and immediately cleavage his community, does this mean embodying the Electoral College or the Supreme Court overturning Roe?

Imagine actively discarding contributions from people that don't have #blm #woke #transrights in their GitHub bio.
Has he really?
How does Drew have so much time to burn on this needless drama?
When your orbiters are more than willing to pay top dollar for a "minimalist" version of GitHub and you can save money on salaries by recruiting your most ardent simps to "volunteer" their time -- yes, the profits can pay for a move to Europe and ample time to work on "passion projects."
Drew doesn't seem to post about it anymore.
A bit ironic for someone advocating transparency to not stay consistent and publish his company's financial disclosures.
digging up those is for another day.
We needed them yesterday.
some barely legal developer on Discord didn't fellate the girldick hard enough.
Aren't SH developers required to be on IRC?
Andreas stays firm
He is King for a reason. Unfortunately, it'll be a sad day when, not if, Andreas caves to the mob.

(As far as I can tell, anyway. She'd be the only woman I've ever heard of to run a Mastodon instance.)
There are plenty of women running Pleroma and Mastodon instances, just none of them are exceptionally large, I believe Spinster is the largest and Mary Kate has Alex Gleason to help administer it since he develops the soapbox frontend which was exclusive to Spinster for some time. I find women tend to prefer the Misskey community more than Pleroma and Mastodon because its more attached to the Japanese weeb culture, you don't tend to get many "normal" women on the Fediverse, they're all weebs, TERFs or autistic IT professional that make one post a month about their cat or some project they're working on.

I know of a few who run their own instance: Nina Paley, Mary Kate (Alex Gleason's wife). Those are off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more.

Both are fair enough, but I did mean specifically Mastodon rather than the Fediverse in general. Mastodon is very troon-heavy.

Not to mention the classic tactic of "I would TOTALLY do X if not for Y". Yeah, sure, "Luna". You coming from Asahi Linux... totally convinced you'd develop "a game" for a toy* operating system, which at present only practically runs in a VM with no hardware-accelerated GPU support to speak of. Sure you were going to do for SerenityOS gaming what CrunkLord420 did for TempleOS. Definitely aren't fishing to sabotage Andreas' project with no intention to get involved.

Given this is the same dad bod furry degenerate who hung out with Hector at a weeb convention, both afterwards testing positive for Covid, all I can say is time for another booster you fat faggot.

* No knock against Andreas at all, his system has great potential and hoping he continues the momentum.

If you're a woman tranny in tech and see no conduct and "ideology is banned" that's a good indicator that you are not welcome there.
Fixed it to what he really means.
He's not actually wrong (with this change): anyone who's not explicitly sucking the girl-CoC can be assumed to hate troons. Because they're utterly insufferable.

Someone just realized that the miiverse stuff was ActivityPub and trawled up Chris Chan's posts from a decade ago.
Something's amiss here. After a cursory look, the Wii U appears to predate ActivityPub, which is still older than I thought, at nearly a decade old now. Was that added later? I never owned a Wii U.

While skulking around for the details, I found this:

You are correct. It looks like some archivers pulled 17 TB of Miiverse comments back when the shutdown was announced here. Then recently (last December) another archiver deployed a bot that crossposts archived Miiverse content to ActivityPub, source code here.

Of the five people named on the ActivityPub specs, two (Christine Lemmer-Webber and Erin Shepherd) are troons. (As far as I can tell, Jessica Tallon and Amy Guy are normal women. Well, as "normal" as people who write specs for the W3C can be.)

A drama is unfolding in the generative art community. However Im VERY TIRED while I write this but ill do my best
Processing is a creative generative art language that's similar to Java built by Casey Reas and Ben Fry in 2001. Over the years spinoffs have been made - the important one is p5.js: a JavaScript version of Processing created by Lauren Lee McCarthy. p5.js is arguably the more popular than it's powerful older brother because it is easy to pick up (you can start in a web editor without downloading any packages), integrate into webpages, and build frameworks for while Processing is more cumbersome. p5.js definitely gets a lot more love from the marketing budget.
I cannot state enough how ubiquitous Processing and p5.js are. Almost every single generative artist has honed their skills over Processing or p5.js. Eventually to manage Processing and it's spinoffs the Processing Foundation was created. Take a look at it's website to see what the organization is like.
A few days ago, Ben Fry makes a Twitter thread announcing his resignation. Archiving tweets sucks ass so I'll do screenshots for threads.

The main point of interest is that the Processing Foundation has been spending a lot of money and none of it has gone to Processing 4.0, the newest version of Processing released in the past year. The Foundation actually wasn't always that much of a spender: they got more than $10 million in donations in 2021 alone.

This might be crypto/NFT money. A lot of people who make NFTs started by learning Processing so I wouldnt be surprised if artists started to give back when NFTs became big. However, $10 million is a lot of money.
Anyways Ben gets a lot of support at first. Heres the hacker news thread. Then people who are the core of the Processing Community and foundation start talking.

Dorothy Santos is on the Board of Directors (this isnt a thread, she just responds to her original tweet so idk the order): https://archive.ph/CWpRx

1696669758339.png
Lauren McCarthy reposts the first tweet in response to the thread and then adds a comment hinting that Ben doesnt like that the money is going to women and PoC. White guy immediatly gets labeled as sexist.
1696669112042.png
Then a few days later, a wave of others start making statements all at once. I think the board and other members convened and decided to post inclusivity statements. The really important one is this by Casey Reas:

Thats all I have for it now.
As soon as I saw Ben's tweet a few days ago I immediately knew that the whole story wont be revealed until a few weeks from now. So much money can change people and make them vindictive. But that being said, I'd be a bit annoyed if the application I created and the foundation is named after didn't get much attention. But the Processing Foundation is VERY woke because there's tons of trans people and it was made by white, affluent, highly educated, and liberal scholars. Their front page links to a land AND digital acknowledgement:

🌱 Land and Digital Acknowledgements 💻

Processing Foundation has no physical location. Our team works remotely in the lands of the Tongva, Chumash, Ohlone, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Lipan Apache, Lenape, and Canarsee peoples, as well as a neighborhood in Germany whose streets are named after African countries Germany has colonized. We work across digital platforms, servers, and technological devices that are connected through electric wiring and transmissions, traveling across the U.S. and throughout the globe. We invite you to meditate on this digital fragmentation and infrastructure that lays its foundation through the global white capitalist, colonialist, and imperialist framework we live in today.

We, and our devices, exist on stolen land. Our digital infrastructures exist globally through foundations of anti-Blackness, anti-indigeneity, Orientalism, racism, heterosexism, femmephobia, slavery, classism, colorism, ableism, ageism, surveillance capitalism, sizeism, and religious imperialism. We invite you to remember the labor and love of QTBIPOC femme, elder, disabled, low-income healers, crafters, technologists, storytellers, and artists. We acknowledge the natural systems of the universe that inspire digital technology, but that producing, maintaining, and disposing of technology is extractive and appropriative. We hope to give attention to, nourish, and co-evolve with life-affirming and celebrating forces that teach us the power of endurance, as our plant, animal, earth, and human ancestors, who have survived throughout the beginning of time. This is in remembrance of the spirits that are embedded in the technologies we have evolved with.

We acknowledge and honor the many native lands you are joining us from and invite you to this grounding by visiting: https://native-land.ca/, as well as those of us who are on lands that have experienced many forms of violence from colonization, imperialism, feudalism, capitalism, casteism, patriarchy, tribalism, to xenophobia. For those who reside in contexts that currently benefit from oppressive systems, we encourage you to meditate on the intricate webs that create structures of privilege from extraction of the global south, while holding space for nuances of bodies that are oppressed by these systems existing in those contexts. We also acknowledge that the world doesn’t exist in a binary, and that oppressed peoples can have a history of being oppressors, and vice versa.

We encourage you to visit https://nativegov.org/make-an-impact/ to donate, sponsor, follow, and share resources to take action. This acknowledgement can be adapted to fit anyone’s needs in space-holding and may be used without permission with credit. We wish to amend this acknowledgement annually as well as for different space-holding needs of our foundation and beyond.

(The Land and Digital Acknowledgements is inspired by Data & Society and Disability Futures Digital Land Acknowledgements)
I know people who went to their conferences and it can get insufferable. Apparently these people are on the cutting edge of wokeness.
