The short of it is that USA backed the SDF, a rebel faction. They now control a large area in north-east of Syria, which also includes a significant amount of Syria’s (admittedly meagre) oil reserves. They did actually take a significant amount of that land from ISIS. The USA is there to help their buddies the SDF. Now that ISIS is gone, it’s mostly to protect them from Turkey and Syria. It’s definitely skeevy and I hope Assad can reunify Syria peacefully.

The USA does buy oil from them but claims that most of that is used in the ME anyway. I’m not sure if there’s much oil or not.

China's assets are mostly southern Asian and Africa, they have enough pull in the middle east for the New Silk Road as they call it, they wouldn't bother with Israel and Palestine. They have enough votes in the UN from the amount of African and south Asian countries they've built infrastructure and industry in to ensure the UN can never get enough votes to act against them, they have no reason to risk dipping their weirdly shaped feet into this kiddy pool filled with blood and urine.
