From a certain point of view. One could argue the Railroad is evil, in the sense they are giving machine's humanity, and are wasting resources to aid synths instead of undercutting the Institute.

The Brotherhood's leadership changed under very convenient circumstances, but the Lyonist idea was eventually purged when they reunited with the Outcasts. Now they operate like they did on the West, tech worshipers that behave more like vultures that will peck you clean of technology. Not to mention their hatred for creatures that may possibly carry humanity in the form of Gen II and III synths.
The Minutemen don't organiza any thing stronger than just a military with no government. The Institute destroyed attempts to make a coalition government. To some, the price of joining the Minutemen is conscription, going where ever ordered with whayever you have to fight any possible foe. And in return? The promise of protection from a group that has nobody higher to answer to.

My favorite part of New Vegas and 4 is the grey and grey morality.
The three main groups (Railroad, Brotherhood, Minutemen) though are arguably much less evil than the Institute. The Brotherhood had an understandable hatred of Synths, but they kind of take it to another level which is their downside. Railroad want to help as many as they can, but their desire to help synths really doesn't help the Commonwealth anywhere in the long run. Running with the Minutemen seems like a good idea because their ending can leave all the "good" factions intact, but I really think they're boring compared to slightly hateful techlords and synth activists.

Now the Institute I just don't get. You walk in there, you meet Father, Father goes on and on about how they're "the future of humanity" when all they've ever done for humanity is murder random schmucks and replace them with robots. They have all this tech that could arguably improve the lives of people not only in the Commonwealth, but the rest of whatever is left of the world. Instead though they just stay holed up in their boring lab and complain about the outside world and how doomed it is. There's no reason to side with them other than "muh son". Even "muh son" though can't save the Institute from being some sort of dumb """grey""" faction because the player doesn't know enough about the asshat to have some sort of emotional connection with him even if character you're playing as does have some sort of connection. There is literally nothing good about them except for their work on fake Gorillas which is pretty cool.

I chose the Minutemen because I'm a big communitarian. Plus, if the Institute, the Brotherhoodnand the Railroad are so great, then why can't they beat swords into ploughshares?

My first playthrough had me roleplay as myself...by the end of it I noticed how I went from being a good guy to basically Darth Vader for the Brotherhood
If he had done as ordered with no hesitation, including killing his friend, murdering his son and happily engulfing the Institute in nuclear fire

There are people who seriously believe that the needs of the many outweight the few so much, they see destruction of innocent humans as a small price. Depending on who you ask, things like using human embryos for their cells or even cloning a human for parts is a real example.

I think what the commonwealth really needs is a little return to roots.

Commonwealth is the only setting in fallout where slavery isn't widespread (slavers in 1, 2, 3 and legion in NV). It's not explicit in the game, but it was due to the efforts of the Railroad. They're antislavery in general, not just for synths.

This is a great idea for a grey faction, except the Institute doesn't enforce it at all.
"Hey Shaun why should I side with you?"
"We are the FUTURE OF HUMANITY!"
"Okay, how so? What are you doing to make humanity thrive in this post apocalyptic world?"
"FUTURE OF HUMANITY, don't betray me dad I will make you our leader!"
"Shaun what the fuck are you saying? I'm not a scientist I can't manage projects that I know jack shit about."
"FUTURE OF HUMANITY, dad you gotta believe!"

That's fair and all, but from what I saw in the game, they're just a bunch of guys in leather holding down a basement in a church and Bunker Hill. Unlike the Brotherhood and unlike the former Minutemen, they don't seem to have the manpower or the resources or the defenses to have any sort of presence the Commonwealth is going to benefit from. I'm surprised they wiped out most slavery in the Commonwealth by themselves because of that.

They just had their shit wrecked by the Institute when you joined them. One of your old missions is to go to their old base to recover intel which was much nicer than the church basement

The Railroad is mostly into subterfuge and guerrilla tactics, they operate mostly with each member only having a portion of an entire synth rescue operation so that if ever captured they only have a portion of the overall plan (With P.A.M. Desdemona and Deacon performing most of the planning). Prior to the Institute's attack on the Switchboard they were high in numbers (which was what led to their downfall).

The Institute has tried before to help the commonwealth by Establishing the CPG (the government that collasped and everyone blamed the Institute on) and prepared for its establishment for four whole years. However squabbling between the different factions and towns lead to the collapse of the CPG and it was ultimately blamed on the Institute and they threw their hands in the air and decided only to look out for themselves.

The Institute's ultimate plan is to simply wait out the extinction of all life on the surface (which we know will likely never happen) which they expect to happen any day now, so that they can colonize the surface using the technology they've created over the centuries (teleportation, super GMO crops, synthetic animals and plants, cheap and effective manufacturing, clean energy, etc.)

They're the ones with the biggest potential to improve human life, but because of prior incidents and paranoia they only look out for themselves, and make themselves the least relatable faction besides the BoS.

So why is it aside from artificial life the Institute has shittier tech than the Enclave or the Shi? Even the Eastern Brotherhood has arguably better tech at this point. I'm pretty sure the NCR or the Legion could actually take the Institute in a straight up fight fairly easily.

Why didn't the Institute just finish them off then? I'm really confused why Bunker Hill is still active as a Railroad hideout if the Institute has the manpower to wreck their shit like that. The Institute also produces Synths at an incredibly fast rate (seemed to take about a minute to build one Synth when I checked out their lab). What's stopping them from just going all out?

This is really confusing to me too. So the Institute (group of geniuses) got together a group of uncooperative politicians and then somehow managed to get blamed for killing the group they started? How did they fuck up so bad with that? Why do people blame the Institute for killing the delegates anyways if they were the ones that rounded up the delegates? For what purpose would they destroy their own group and waste their own resources?

Oh boy if this is true, then that's just plain dumb. Why would they ever expect life to just wither and die when it's been doing arguably better than it was before? And if they want to wait out the end of life up above, then why do they constantly put themselves in the spotlight by murdering people and replacing them with Synths? What's stopping them from creating their own little government on the surface that includes their technology and ideals instead of making everyone on the surface hate them? They could expand that way much more efficiently with the resources that they have and if they gave the Commonwealth a chance to join their community then people might actually just not hate them.[/QUOTE]

Eh I'd argue with just the BioScience division (which according to Tinker Tom and Desdemona can and has used biological weapons to clear out settlements) the Legion and the NCR would be in trouble. The Legion would have the biggest disadvantage since they don't even fight with conventional weapons (spears and clubs) and the NCR has been proven to be weak to things like infiltration (which the Institute excels at). The BoS and the Railroad are the bigger threats to them, the Brotherhood because of their clear determination to wipe out entities like the Institute and the Railroad because of their guerrilla tactics.

The Institute is basically Big MT, but with a clear goal.

Because the operation was a secret from the Institute until the Battle of Bunker Hill. And the Institute's main limitations are centered around raw resources such as electricity (hence building the new nuclear power plant) and raw materials (hence the scavenging teams on the surface)

Because the Institute is easy to blame when they've done a lot of shitty stuff with the supermutant plauge, the synth infiltration and the clearing out of settlements.

Because they're elitists and have no sense or perspective of the surface. Just hang out with X6-88 to get an idea what they think of the Commonwealth. A few do want to improve things above (particular in Robotics and Bioscience) but the Institute really ironically squashes out those kinds of thoughts via peer pressure.

Gonna have to disagree there. Aside from third-gen synths Big MT blows anything the Institute has away. They have the best tech and the brightest minds. Not even the Institute is functionally immortal like the Think Tank.
