If this is true about the in-law connection and the foster child, it opens up a new line of speculation. Recalling that Nick supported a camp for trans youth to 'totally not be converted', there might have been a Mint Salad-esque situation where he supported the child in some kind of coming-out that was disfavored by the in-laws. They are hyper-religious, by all account.

This adds to the list of theories about confrontation about his drinking, working hours, and content. There was also the speculation that his father-in-law was an angry drunk, or some such.

If this timeline is correct, I lean more towards a family issue than a medical diagnosis, being cut off legally, or something to do with the Rekieta clan.

When was the last time Nick mentioned the mess that having his nieces and nephews over caused? They live VERY close and Nick has said that Kayla's sister (the mother) is her best friend.

Yeah it was always clear to me that the "worst day" had something to do with the wife's family and/or the church. The mentions of her family have went way way down since then and it's obvious the inlaws don't provide the logistical support they used to with the kids.

Is the wife's dad a big-wheel in the church? It could the a combined thing where they essentially got kicked of the family and the church at the same time.

Right before this Nick made some kind of a disturbance at a family wedding (drunk) and was talking about how he wanted the people (related to Lady Gollum) that were staying in his other house to get out or start paying rent. I kinda think he was declared not a team player.

If Nick was getting beat up by black kids, that would imply he wasn’t part of their clique, and wasn’t hood, or at least didn’t have enough street cred to not get his ass whooped. But the specifics of their friendship has always confused me

I'm not from Texas but I am from the more generalized south, and here it's not at all uncommon for elementary/especially middle school boys to be at each others' throats when one is trying to assimilate into a friend group until it finally erupts into 'violence' (ie awkward hugging and limpfisted punches because neither has the strength nor knowledge to do any actual damage) only for them to seemingly be lifelong best friends the following day

In Nick/Drex's case though, Drex may very well have been big enough to properly beat Nick up since Nick has said he was always really short/small until he was like 22, and I have a friend Drex's size (maybe even a bit bigger) who was already like 5'4 120lbs in kindergarden

Oh yeah lol, my friendgroup didn't start that til middleschool since we were always heavily supervised in elementary but slugging each other in the shoulder as hard as we could was just "Hello," and if you complained you got two more. Drexel and Nick knew each other from growing up in Lakeville MN. Lakeville MN in the 1990s when they were growing up was somewhat new and very, very white "edge" suburb. My impression is that Nick and Drexel were both nerdy kids in the suburbs. I can't say for sure, but I doubt that it was black "kids" or that Drexel spent much of any time around non-family black people growing up.
Both of them project nerdy wuss. Drexel isn't street at all.
