Mass shooting reported at multiple locations in Lewiston, Maine

Yeah, this is one of those situations where he could pop up in the morning and start shooting up stores in another town when they open. Wouldn't be shocked to see a lot of places in surrounding counties not open today just in case.
I've seen reports of school and business closures already starting.

Isn't there a dam blocking the river from the Atlantic? Being even a non-fugitive at daytime wouldn't be enough to get through that
Looks like you could easily ramp it

Absolutely wild that the news can't agree on a death count yet.
I'm gonna throw journos an extremely rare bone for this one. This is happening at night on a workday when all of them were very likely asleep, plus the perp is actively on the loose right now and coroner's just now been able to start putting tags on people, and I imagine every policing agency in Maine isn't caring for making statements to the press at the moment.

It's clearly not full auto or burst fire. Urban rifle training in the military teaches 2 rapid shots center mass to the target. If it doesn't drop, take 1 well aimed shot at the head. If there's multiple targets, put 2 rapid shots center mass into each before aiming for the head.

He's firing two rapid shots, changing targets, two rapid shots, changing targets, and so on... There's occasionally a 3rd shot. As an instructor, he was teaching people how to do this all the time, and probably 90% of his live fire training was spent putting 2 shots into everything.

I'd also guarantee while he's inside with an optic, he's using a shooting technique where you keep both eyes open, and your brain projects the reticle on the center of your vision while maintaining reasonable accuracy. It allows you to take those 2 quick shots and quickly change targets.

NYT is reporting "at least 7."
NY Post is reporting 22.
NH Union Leader, "at least 22."
Bangor Daily News, "as many as 20."

The 3 major papers closest to the shooting: the Portland Press Herald, the Lewiston Sun Journal, and the Boston Globe, have all settled on "at least 16."
This is pretty common. Victims can be hidden or dying from injuries. The worst imo is when you are mortally wounded but still have days till death sets in.

An entire county in Pennsylvania went on lockdown for a week over a 5-foot-tall Brazilian with unusually good parkour skills, yes I would imagine Southern Maine is looking at, at minimum, a surprise three-day weekend if this guy isn't caught within the next couple hours.

I'm not familiar with the Army's training in particular, but hammer pairs as we called them were getting phased out 15 years ago. Unless you are a competition shooter or a some spec ops hard dick, you're double taps or whatever you want to call them are probably shit. You'll much better putting the front sight on the target or getting what we called a flash sight picture than just hammering away at your trigger, not that it stops guys from doing that. That is the way the training has been trending for a long time.

I am not sure of the exact way the military stores its weapons but surely someone has to have the keys to the locked up guns as they may actually need to use them during emergency. It might not be the weapons instructor but he might be the one who returns them to the armory. Does the range have its own armory or do they have to walk the guns across base every single day? If he works on the guns he could at the very least steal key parts not available otherwise.

I predict they don't find him tonight. The police are flailing and don't even have a perimeter. All they have are single helicopter and a few roads closed. Did they even consider the possibility of him taking a small boat down river?
The CATM range will have an on-site armory weapons used for training are stored at. Personnel living on base are also supposed to store their weapons at the armory as well.

How this guy still had access to guns after his schizo episodes is beyond me. Commanders revoke firearms access, even private, at the first sign one of their unit members is showing signs of wanting to do harm to themselves or others. Guess the reserves are a bit different there.

I don't know how reserves operate, but every active duty armory I've ever been in has had an armed duty officer at the armory 24/7. You couldn't just stroll in unchallenged even if you had the keys.

Gonna say what I said in chat:

Driving a subaru is a red flag for mental health issues.
Subarus are extremely common in Maine and not just a lesbian car because they're a relatively cheap decent car with AWD if you want traction in the winter and don't want a truck or SUV. There are an absolute shitload on the road up here.
