That I agree with whole-heartedly: I'm fine with localizations that are akin to what Dragon Quest gets because the original creator's intent is maintained even if the prose is absurd at times--a good example is the hammerhood sex joke from the first Builders game. The gist is that the protagonist needs to learn how to assemble a big hammer in order to start building fortifications and asks a hammerhood monster how to do so. In the Japanese script the tool and the monster have the same name, to which the monster answers the question by saying the protagonist just needs to find a nice specimen and lay her on her belly before realizing what the player meant. In the English script the joke is reworked to the monster saying "You want to see my tool?! But we only just met~" before realizing his error.

The bullshit that Nintendo's treehouse pulls is nothing short of cancer born from an infuriating arrogance that only west coast genderblobs can produce. The -99 Testosterone twink wearing last decade's problem glasses is not going to know the story, characters, and context better than the original creators, period, and the excuse of censoring things for western sensibilities uwu is even flimsier than the fucker's relationship with his father.

Makes me wish the Farms was around back in the early 00s when romhacking was really taking off. There were a ton of cringy weeb translators doing 'improvements' to games that people hated, Skyrender's FF6 retranslation being the only one I remember because of the sheer volume of drama it generated. The [Trans] tag has always been a magnet for Internet drama it seems.

I'm reminded of that one awful FF4 translation that shoved in as many pop culture references as possible and had a syntax yanked straight out of a south park episode. To this day the fucker behind it is defending his cringe, saying that it's absurd to want to "read a Japanese script in English".

Some fan translations are good, but far too many are complete dog shit.

I preordered this game on October 17 2023.

I remember my parents bought me mario rpg when it came out in 1996 I was super young I wanted the game because I played super Mario world on the Super Nintendo. I ended up getting earthbound too later. I remember that on earthbound the people who join you and fight with you follow you on the screen when your walking around but on mario rpg your followers they kinda walk into mario and disappear into Mario’s body. Like they are going into his body almost and mario is carrying them in his pockets. I wonder if the characters will follow you the remake they should have a follow mode you can toggle on or off case you want to jump around without followers or want followers on earthbound they follow you but don’t follow you on mario rpg whoaaaaaaaa

Surprisingly, this does not include the translation, for the most part, apparently:

I was especially surprised to see that the script is effectively identical to the old English translation. I'd expected to see a brand-new translation of the original Japanese here, but basically all the tiny little in-jokes and pop culture references are still intact. The only notable differences are in character names - 'Toadstool' is now 'Peach,' in keeping with the Princess's modern nomenclature, and the somewhat dated 'Frogfucius' name has been changed to a more generic 'Frog Sage.'

They also kept the Peach ??? Easter egg

Likely not. There is a boss rush kind of mode with changes to combat where timed attacks do aoe damage but it's more or less the same game.

I'd think it's because the character looks like a Chinese caricature, so they'd think using the name would be a step too far. But hey, that's just my theory based on how paranoid I've seen people be about what's offensive and not offensive before.
