Super Mario RPG Remake - coming soon

joke's on you faggots. I've made peace with the fact that SoA will most likely stay dead, and in the process of staying dead, also stay pure and unsullied. Meanwhile your precious Mario RPG will most likely be molested by the troons at Nintendo Treehouse. Who's really winning here? :smug:
It's okay, I know you're still crying on the inside.

.....it......never stops hurting. seeing all of these people get THEIR childhood favorites remastered in pristine high quality....even if SEGA did remaster Skies, it would most likely be a half-baked port with no real improvements (which is basically like how all of SEGA's re-releases are). it's not fair, goddamn it *sigh*

double-post, I know, but vidya autist Ryan Bloom gives us his thoughts: https://blazehedgehog.tumblr.com/po...thoughts-on-the-mario-rpg-remake-announcement
I’m excited for it, but I’m tapering my expectations slightly. I’m not a huge fan of the art style.

Like, it looks great, and I think they’re doing their best to match the aesthetic of the original game anywhere and everywhere they can. Like, this blows me away:

The resolution of the original objects were so low I almost couldn’t even tell you what was in the box, and yet I look at the remaster, and it’s perfect.

But then I see this:

I don’t mind how stout everyone is or how the proportions are different, but… the aspect ratio looks wrong?

Like, okay, we have Mario, right.

So they took this Mario and shortened up his limbs and stuff to make him look more like he does in the SNES game, right?

But then, it’s like, somebody said “that’s not good enough” so they grabbed the corners of the image and squished him down even more.

And it looks weird. And cheap. They did the same thing to Peach, too. And yet somehow Geno, Mallow, and even Bowser look fine. Well, Bowser’s sort of his own kettle of fish, because he’s missing the bulbous, grizzly-bear-claw charm of the original Super Mario RPG Bowser and now just looks like regular, modern Bowser.

Bless them, but it’s just not the same vibe. The same goes for things like Bowser’s keep.

So it’s a case of swings and roundabouts. I’m not offended by it, but there are definitely things I wish were better. And the jury’s still out on what they’re doing to the game mechanics – seems like there’s some new systems in there that they haven’t talked about yet.

I’m mostly optimistic, though.
agree? disagree?

Hm. You know, I never really thought about it much, but it looks like most of what they used to craft the characters originally were just a bunch of gouraud shaded spheres. I'll bet they made Mario so stout because it'd be incredibly easy to make him look lanky and weird if they made his legs any longer than his hands. I guess that's also how they designed Mallow, just throwing around spheres in whatever software they had and someone said "those look like clouds. let's make a lil' cloud dude that'll get overshadowed by wooden mega man".

I always liked Mario RPG's very early 3D artstyle, though I can totally see kids today just seeing it as super obsolete.

Don't worry Vyse, another Sonic collection is co;)ming!

I'm going to give this a pass, and I put SMRPG in my top five.

The biggest thing that throws me about it (aside from being a shot for shot remake of a game I know inside and out) is the animations being way off. The specific brand of slapstick SMRPG goes for is heavily inspired by Buster Keaton and has a very snappy pacing to it which is heavily timing dependent and works wonders with a limited sprite/animation budget where it doesn't look out of place to have a character do a drastic pose change in a single frame or have a three-frame walk loop. Bits like Mario explaining the Peach/Bowser/Exor scene to the chancellor via pantomime by quickly running back and forth and swapping his sprites just aren't going to land in 3D the way they're presented in the trailer. You get to see one of his bowser pantomimes during the trailer and it's a full half second spin-and-cloud transition instead of two frames like the original.

I'll hold my judgment until it's out (I'm curious about that ult meter in combat and if they'll wrap up dangling loose ends like the Mokura fight from the original) but I'm not expecting it to blow me away in any capacity.

Someone pointed out to me that there is some weird gauge during the battle scenes and that HP numbers are completely fucking off from the original game which is making me think maybe they are going to add new things ,even if it's just combat related.

I dunno, I'm a little more excited for it now. I still think it doesn't help that I replayed it just a few months ago though.

Super Mario RPG was the first game that I ever torrented on to the PS VITA when I learning how game emulation works since getting the original cartridge for it online was expensive, so finally finding out that this was getting a remake is both hilarious and insane at the same time.

Yoko wins again. I hope she gets royalties.

I didn't have a SNES growing up so unfortunately I am going to be playing for the first time. I do remember thanks to old sites like ytmnd that apparently Peach has her panties or something as an item and also Samus Aran and Link are found sleeping in beds.

Genofags will now never shut the fuck up, prepare a few threads because I think we may just have some new cows based off of this.

Since nobody posted yet, they are adding a triple move gauge and post-game content with boss fight rematchs:
Also original songs will be available in the game.
The all damage thing is interesting. One of the worst things about SMRPG was facing a group of 5 weak enemies and having to kill them one at a time. Anything that speeds that up is welcome.

I bet they do that gay thing Pokémon does where you can't unlock the original songs until extremely late in the game.

The last trailer actually covered a couple things I was worried about and it looks much more promising now.

The absolute funniest (and on-point for SMRPG humor) thing they could do with the all-damage effect is make it apply to things like Peach's Therapy spell. Have her cast her shitty heal and restore 30HP but have it still trigger the shockwave that does damage.

E: It would also be really funny to make some random enemy counter when hit with magic damage and then have a formation with like 6 of that enemy somewhere in the game just to completely dunk on anyone who doesn't realize what's going to happen if they try to spam timed hits to kill everything quickly.
