I’m excited for it, but I’m tapering my expectations slightly. I’m not a huge fan of the art style.
Like, it looks great, and I think they’re doing their best to match the aesthetic of the original game anywhere and everywhere they can. Like, this blows me away:
The resolution of the original objects were so low I almost couldn’t even tell you what was in the box, and yet I look at the remaster, and it’s perfect.
But then I see this:
I don’t mind how stout everyone is or how the proportions are different, but… the aspect ratio looks wrong?
Like, okay, we have Mario, right.
So they took this Mario and shortened up his limbs and stuff to make him look more like he does in the SNES game, right?
But then, it’s like, somebody said “that’s not good enough” so they grabbed the corners of the image and squished him down even more.
And it looks weird. And cheap. They did the same thing to Peach, too. And yet somehow Geno, Mallow, and even Bowser look fine. Well, Bowser’s sort of his own kettle of fish, because he’s missing the bulbous, grizzly-bear-claw charm of the original Super Mario RPG Bowser and now just looks like regular, modern Bowser.
Bless them, but it’s just not the same vibe. The same goes for things like Bowser’s keep.
So it’s a case of swings and roundabouts. I’m not offended by it, but there are definitely things I wish were better. And the jury’s still out on what they’re doing to the game mechanics – seems like there’s some new systems in there that they haven’t talked about yet.
I’m mostly optimistic, though.
