Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Next three episodes for the newest Total Drama season are out. Dunno if they're actually all leaks so I won't link them, but you can find them all on YouTube, last I checked. Just gonna autism-post about the season so far.

It's interesting that we're getting a season with a completely unchanged set of contestants from the last one. As in no one new and no one left out. So far, they haven't utilized this well, as aside from a few instances, no one seems that familiar with each other except for the two pairings that already knew each other before the show started. And in a unique twist, Priya is the winner of the last season. They're entirely dropping alternate winners, and the first episode actually made reference to her winning multiple times. Makes me wonder why, now of all times, they decided to do this.

Also the teams are Skunk Butts (not kidding) which has Zee, Priya, Millie, Damien, Emma, Axel, Nichelle, and Caleb.
The other team is the Rat Faces which has Bowie, MK, Wyne, Raj, Ripper, Julia, Chase, and Scary Girl.

First episode was a rushed bit, of course, no need to introduce the contestants again. There are a few lines making reference to past friendships or grudges, but nothing substantial. They're going Squid Games with the challenges as far as I can tell, with this one being a more family friendly version of the "Red Light, Green Light" bit on the show. Just with paint-filled balloons rather than snipers. Nichelle trained hard between seasons and is actually badass now, doing great for her team. Caleb is determined to get into an alliance with Priya since she won, and Scary Girl tries to be normal to not scare her fellow contestants and get booted off. Of course, she's still spooky, and she admits to watching everyone sleep from their closets to learn how to be normal, and they vote her off. She's honestly my favorite character, despite her one-note nature, so I'm kinda bummed. She swore she'd return, but as of episode four, this hasn't happened yet.

Second episode was actually really entertaining due to a lot of slapstick. Nothing new in the show, but it felt especially brutal this time, the contestants having to go down slides increasingly dangerous slides and make it into a wooden basketball hoop. I dunno what it was, but the impacts against the backboard and rim just felt unusually brutal, could be the excessive ragdolling, I dunno. Ripper develops an out-of-nowhere interest in Axel, and he just sort of fucks up for his team. Millie tricks a blindfolded Damien (whose entire shtick this season is being a pussy) into the most dangerous slide. It wins them the challenge, but everyone on the team is mad at her. Chase was tricked by Emma into trying to make an intro for his sliding on a camera he brought himself, and never ended up attempting the challenge, being voted off. Emma hates Chase again, by the way, but Emma literally never acknowledges his elimination at all.

Third episode is a trek through the woods with the contestants covered in a super sticky sap. Julia and MK have by this point teamed up and are starting to cheat, MK utilizing an extra intern uniform to get sap-destroying spray for her team. By the way, MK was de-yellowed between seasons, which I find amusing and distracting. Ripper and Axel get stuck ass-to-ass (because of course they do) so they try farting to blow a big sap bubble to pop them apart (because of course they do) and it works. Damien is mad at Millie for how she tricked him, and Caleb has to literally carry the entire time stuck to a log on his back. They still lose, and also Wayne and Raj are super not into the cheating. Millie apologizes to Damien and they make up, but Chris leaves them all stuck and Damien's tongue is stuck to his shirt so he can't tell everyone Millie was sorry, so she gets the boot. Thank God. Aside from Ripper, she was my least favorite of the new contestants.

Fourth and latest episode is this weird situation where the contestants were asked "Would you rather?" questions. There are two bridges for each team, and they get videos of members of their opposing team being asked the questions. They have to guess A or B and if they guess right, they go further a space. If they don't, they fall through a trap door. Emma tries to help, being a "people person" but all her guesses go wrong, but the team keeps trying to rely on her anyway for some reason. Caleb's still obsessed with getting Priya into an alliance (Priya, by the way, not acknowledging her closest friend on the show being eliminated) and Julia/MK cheat in a way that Wayne and Raj don't notice. Bowie is still with Raj, and doesn't want to upset him. Totally gonna explode in his face later. In one of the questions, Axel is revealed to love poetry, so Ripper writes her one (which is about farts of course) and it somehow wins her over and she kisses him, not even kidding. She outright rejected him at the start of the episode, which makes it stranger. Emma is eliminated because she was one win away from winning the entire challenge, but flubbed. She essentially had no character with Chase gone, so no loss there.

Season feels kind of stiff so far, the show seems more focused on new arcs and character relationships than establishing older ones. At this point, the Bowie/Raj relationship is literally the only remaining holdover from last season, not counting pre-existing ones like Wayne/Raj and Emma/Chase. But we'll see how it goes...

Beat me to it.

Once again, kind of just want AT to end. I love the original, but its time has passed. I always fear it continuing even if it has been good so far.
It's the most depressing thing when scrappy and alternative IPs become just things for consumption. Don't get me wrong I always love more Fionna, but Adventure Time gets less special with each passing year. And the worst thing about it is that continuing the show makes less room for new things. I like adventure time, sure, but, I wanna experience a new cartoon with new ideas, feel a whole new feeling.

I remember my dad's old army buddy would visit us, and once demanded incessantly for us to find a way to watch adventure time despite us not having cable, because he wanted desperately to watch the Simon and Marcy episode. If we keep regurgitating the same few shows these unique little experiences won't be special anymore.

It's pretty telling we're 3 (coming up 4) years into the 2020s and Cartoon Network still has no single show that defines them in this decade right now, so they're just rehashing IPs and rebroadcasting old media they had with their Checkered Past thing.

I liked the first season fine so I am fine with this, especially with the few loose ends from the first season.

But I'm going to tune out if they actually make a series for future characters (the duo that appeared in the series finale for regular Adventure Time and the last two episodes of Fionna and Cake.)

Living proof the so called "fiercest fighting force on God's green earth" has most of its leg work done by drones, technology and icbms.

But yeah fiona and cake was a novelty at best. It did well and was decent enough, but it's clear the only reason it was made was 1. Cn was desperate for something they knew would be a hit. 2. HBO max was desperate for material since they keep removing content people want to see and replacing it with crap.

Oops

Is the show good?
It's pretty comfy. It's a primarily British cast with European folklore (primarily Scandinavian) so it creates a unique juxtaposition. First two seasons are mostly episodic, while the final season will have more of an ongoing story. The movie is good too.

It's fine

CN will never be as good as 90s and 2000s eras, even if they try desperately to replicate.

Are they actually going to have the world become the fionna and cake episode
I doubt that since the original Fiona and cake was written back when bubblegum and marceline were written as straight girls who where love interests to Finn. So the original genderswap versions of them were both boys who fought over Fionas affection. Even if it was all in ice kings head.

To do that in the "real" Fiona and cake would be called "gay erasure" by the loonies on social media.

The gay erasure part sounds good

CN doesn’t really exist beyond branding at this point. Pretty sure WB-Discovery went and gutted the studios for it and Adult Swim.

AT was special in a sense that it was a large aspect of early 2010s culture and that is not something you can get back. The general excitement and energy of 2010-2015 online community was an aspect that really helped the series, yet is mostly absent these days. A lot of the fun of AT was being in it in the moment.
