Scrooge was a usurer. This means that in modern America, Scrooge would probably be a donor to his local Democratic party, though obviously not on the scale of a big time usurer like Larry Fink, who Scrooge would only be able to envy and admire. Of course, the version of a Christmas Carol I usually see around Christmas is the musical with Albert Finney (with Alec Guiness doing a turn as Marley). I remember all the local small business capitalists were happy when he died in the Ghost of Christmas Future's vision, because it meant their debts all died with him. Here's the scene where they all cheer as one of them tears up his debt ledger.

oh yeah the 1970 Scrooge is great. The other version I really like is the 1984 A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott and The Equalizer (Edward Woodward) as The Ghost of Christmas Present. And yes, I remember that scene. Heck I think the entirety of Scrooge is on Youtube. The Hell scene is particularly amusing.

The 1984 A Christmas Carol leans more into the whole workhouses thing, with a scene of two emaciated children hidden under The Ghost of Equalizer Christmas Present. It is on Youtube however I mostly tried to catch it on TV and it's rare that I find it on Television, I think the last time that happened was sometime in the last 5 years but not in the last 2 or 3.

I'd love to know whether Bob has seen either of those, let alone the 1951 black and white Scrooge starring Alastair Sim.
