Starfield has a peculiar quirk where every read uses a system call that bypasses the OS cache. This probably makes it run somewhat better on NVMEs, since those have very low latency and most gaming computers won’t have enough RAM to keep a reasonable portion of the game assets cached, but it does make it run beyond garbage if you’re loading from HDD. There have been mods released to make it use the OS cache specifically for the three players still installing software to HDDs.

I'm sticking with my SAS setup for now, but I did find the concept intriguing. I have a 128GB SSD i paid $9 for that works great, but I did buy it with the expectation that I may have wasted $10. I was using it for the OS drive for my server, but moved it to a 1TB SSD that I knew was a good drive.

I did get a Walram, which seems to be a slightly more trusted Chinese company, and any m.2 drives from them go to $130 for 1tb

Not sure if my local e-store fucked up or they did some sort of unannounced flash sale but I was able to snag myself a new RX 7800 XT for 410 eurodollars, a price that a new RX 6800 was going for just a week or so ago on the same website before getting sold out.
Gonna be a nice upgrade after the GTX 1060 6GB that I've been torturing for the last 5 years. ;)

I did check walram ssds, one of the few brands on Aliexpress that are sorta trustworthy. Their cheapest 2tb ssds are over $100. My 6tb SAS drive i got for $40

Really, with planning out a new computer, I've just chose "all". HDD's for bulk storage and normal games, a heavy duty sata ssd for the boot and important files, and a high speed m.2 for Cyberpunk type games. Everything is isolated, so if something does go poof, I can just shut it down and recover it. Multiple drives are honestly the future

The one thing I've heard in their defense is that it's very easy for designers/modders to use due in part to choices made with the engine. But I don't remember the specifics. Then there's a million counterexamples like attempting to mash multiplayer into the Creation Engine for Fallout 76.

You're probably going to regret that.
The setup I recommend to basically everyone is all-SSD workstation/gaming computer, and just delete your pirated films and anime once you've seeded and watched them, since you can easily redownload that stuff. It's pretty affordable to get 4TB with M.2 nowadays, and few people need more in the current year. If you're intent on data hoarding, get a NAS appliance and fill it with the most cost-effective CMR HDDs (currently seems to be 16TB?) in RAID5. Set it up to automatically scrub once a month and to email you if there's an issue (so you don't turn into Linus Tech Tips and lose your data). Games and such should still install to SSD, since it makes the whole experience so much better, but if needs must you can tell Steam to make a SteamLibrary on your network drive. The extra latency from going over the network doesn't make much difference in this case, since HDDs already have such atrocious performance.

Swapping my PC to a new case and PSU made me thoroughly hate the 24 pin. 12VO is a meh thing thing, IDK. No strong feelings about it.
