Plagued Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

Whatever happened to herbal teas and roast coffees?
As far as social media, honestly I think it boils down to the fact that with tea and coffee there is less to show off, visually. A few years ago at-home coffee bars were a thing which I find kind of kind of obnoxious

But even that's not enough any more. You need all the cups, all the powders, all the syrups. I need to be shown something new every half-second, otherwise you might lose my attention! 😱

Also, dumping all that junk into water is so much easier than being a patrician tea sperg or coffee autist. Compare ripping open a little packet of powder to the effort of making your own bubble tea or chai or dalgona.

Kids used to play makeup with drug store products, now they want Yves St. Laurent eye cream thats $69 for 3/4 oz. *sigh*
i noticed how much the whole "routine" bit appeals to these people

kids used to love playing with makeup because it was like doodling on your face, it was bright and fun and you got to play with paints, but it seems so different to the skincare obsession which is just products, brand names and behaviors

actually i think that's what a large part of this obsession is- the behaviors
we now live in a world where the way you act and walk and talk is no longer limited to your presentation in public, where it's very hard to maintain a 'character', we now have tiktok, the world's largest theatre club
which means in the past it didn't matter what morning cream and moisturizer and foundation you put on because all that was something you do at home in front of the sink- all that mattered what was was visible in public, the color of your lipstick or how you do your makeup, or at most small products you carry outside with you in your bag
now a large part of the appeal is the "routine", this idea that even when supposedly unobserved, you live in a way that's fashionable
it's fascinating actually, they still perform for the public, but they whole trend surrounds making it seem lived and candid, just a 'peek' into your life, a life you only put on for the theoretical viewer

The fact that it's supposedly for her son gives it away as a joke. She's not making a boy carry a purse on the bus, especially with the line "the colour looked too girly".

The whole idea that you need to carry a waterbottle to stay hydrated and healthy is a bit consoomerist. On the african savannah there is probably some nigger trying to powerwalk a cow to death right now, he does not need a water bottle, you should manage to drive to the office without one. There is really no need to drink water all the time continuously.

ill be honest with ya buddy i dont base my life choices on what some african in the savanna is doing right now

you dont need to carry a bottle to stay hydrated, it helps if youre trying to stay hydrated to carry a water bottle
the issue is this roundabout way where its not a desire to utilize the object that makes you carry it, but rather the desire to carry the object which, in turn, makes you say "i already have this trendy object... i might as well use it"

youre not Diogenes, bro, youre on the internet on a New Zealandian bird herding forum pointing and laughing at stupid people

Depends where you live, mate.

Maybe it's a not-having-an-IQ-two-standard-deviations-below-the-human-norm-and-being-literally-retarded thing.
So thirty years ago everyone was retarded and everyone just died of dehydration when not reminded by the beverage industry to drink? Carrying water everywhere is quite a new trend. You don't see waterbottles in old paintings or even photographs.
Now give me some real argument other than "if you don't consume x you must be retarded".

Water bottles were very common in the nineties, at least amongst students. We all carried one, especially in summer.

Also, drink eskies have been popular with blue collar workers since eskies became a thing. They're basically a giant water bottle with a tap.

The Aboriginals before settlement used coolamons.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canteen_(bottle) People have been going outside with water for hundreds of years. What kind of obese shut-in do you have to be to think this crap. Carrying water around outside is for people outdoors and on-the-go, not fatass retards who have never seen the sun. It's the branding of it that's stupid. "I've never seen it in old photos" You have and didn't recognise it.

Here is and article that mentions how "hydration" was invented to sell Gatorade in the seventies. Getting enough water is not hard and unless you are running marathons drinking when you feel thirsty ir quite enough.

It's not about excess water, it's about leaving your house ever, and going to places that don't have something available "when you feel thirsty." Or, hell, about not wanting to waste money and packaging when you can just take it with you. The only stupid thing is the obsession with branding and being more into the Stanley Nalgenes than the simple practicality of being able to drink water when you need to. Some people go outside to places other than stores and restaurants, and spend the whole day there.
