Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

I went back and watched Ethan review of alphacore. His summation was that the "perverts" at Marvel and DC do better work. He shit all over Chuck Dixon for writing like Chuck Dixon because its just too dark and people should not write stories that are dark. He made sure to call out Joe Bennett as an anti-semite and far right extremist before starting the review. He makes a valid point in that the inking by committee done in the book produces inconsistent results. He goes after the coloring with a less convincing argument especially given that Cyberfrog suffers from the same things he is talking about in terms of color. He wants realism in coloring now which is something I can't ever remember being associated with his own work. Certainly not his own current work.

Ethan who is nortorious for his issues in drawing faces becomes a critic of the faces drawn in Alphacore.

Someone in the chat literally called out Watchmen and the Boys as being bad things now. Ethan says that people are crying out for superman stories that portray superman rightfully as a combination of Jesus and Elvis. Ethan tells his audience of middle aged men that we need positive stories for the kids.

Ethan wants people to start telling stories that mean something. Like Cyberfrog. Ethan explained that Cyberfrog is about fixing the world and giving hope to the children. Because that is what its all about.

Before the review, he spent a whole bunch of time sucking off Geoff Johns over the Ghost Machine anthology. I think Ethan really wanted in but has not been invited. It was supposed to inform his review over Alphacore, but the depth of his "review" of Ghost Machine was just paging through and saying "good". I'm not sure he even read the stories.

Ethan spent the rest of the nearly four hour stream bitching about things on twitter and bitching about Eric July some more. Ethan's good friend Vito was in the chat again.

Really low effort by Ethan.

Alphacore had actual art and a story, which made it better than Isom, but far from great. Its biggest handicap is that it's saddled with a stupid premise ("general into super-street cop") that Chuck Dixon did not push back on and instead patched over with 70s cop movie cliches in some sort generic plot-resembling sludge. Ironically Ghost Machine was a lot more like Isom, a preview book meant to introduce a bunch of new characters and dangle plot threads to hook new readers in, but had the benefit of greater clarity of purpose and far better art carrying it. I'm not really a fan of Johns' monotonous superhero writing style he's been cranking out for decades, but Frog copies it religiously so of course he's going to endorse it.

Dan Fraga Black Flag update:

Black Flag Update!

You, yes YOU. You are amazing and for that I am grateful. Why? Because you have been gracious with your patience and have allowed me to work on what I consider the most amazing and remarkable work of not only my career, but my life. This is not hyperbole. I recently turned 50 and with it many revelations had risen to the surface. Everything that I do, I have to look back on with no regrets.

You have spoken in comments, emails, and notes on other social platforms your need for the Black Flag campaign to be updated regularly. Not just to do it, but to show you the respect and gratitude you deserve as a backer of this project. I’ve dragged my feet in doing so. Now, I have a saying and the irony is that I needed to apply it to myself. “It’s hard to read the label when you’re in the jar.” You’ve read the label and have given me a clear picture of what you would like from me in the future of this campaign. I am going to do just that.

Below (spoilers, especially if my storytelling is clear, but not too many as many of these have already been changed for further clarity.) are some of the the building blocks of Black Flag issue 1. Some you've already seen, most this is the first time. The notes have been blurred to protect some of the key aspects of the dialogue. (there are still some surprises to come) I want you to enjoy the book when you get it.

“When will I get my book?” This is the question I get asked the most and the one that haunts my thoughts. It only haunts my thoughts because I am terrible with estimates and in the past have failed to hit those estimates. What I will say is that the book will be in your hands this year. And no, not in the 3rd quarter.
Speaking of this year, it’s the 30th anniversary of the debut of Black Flag! When I created the book and even now, Black Flag is pure wish fulfillment. I wanted to take all of the things that I love and smash them into one idea. Making sense of all of it has been a heck of a ride. One that I am humbled and honored to bring to you.
I thank you, as always. If you’d like to watch the book being drawn, I’m working on a format for the youtube channel where that will be happening. Follow the fragaboom channel if you aren’t already and the couch doodles instagram. Here's a peek at the process:

Once again, Thank YOU for your kindness and generosity.
If you have any questions about the campaign, we are here to answer them!

After four years, all he has are sketches. This guy makes @FROG seem like he is The Flash!

Will the Rippaverse fans gatekeep their fandom like Eric charged them to and oust the lesbian vomit porn incest sisters and their feminist SJW comic, or will Rippa concede defeat to my argument? #MoveDifferent

No good has ever followed a statement like this.

At one point the Matt Bahr guy even stood up and did a happy dance celebrating the small part he played in kicking one more person off the island so he could move up a rung on the ladder. I don't think he realizes (or maybe doesn't care) that he's their new Liam - someone to humor on-camera and then roll their eyes and mock the moment he leaves.
I never made this connection before, but damn it's close. Especially the spergging and constant need to fight back at anyone at any remotely perceived slight.
* Edit: PTP has erased his tweet since posting this so here's a copy. There appears to be a morale crisis in the CG dungeon faction:

I always feel bad for Renie. I could be wrong, but she seems like a genuinely nice person who just wants to make money from her comics/artwork and have fun with her fans that enjoy it. She very naively walked right back into middle America high school girl craziness when she joined CG. The saddest part is at this point, she will always be used by both sides for their drama farming.
Dan Fraga Black Flag update:
For me, Fraga has been the biggest disappointment of the older pros that came into CG. Fraga genuinely loves comics and clearly has read a lot of them because he knows his shit(there has been many times I have wondered if Malin even liles comics, much less even fucking reads them). There have been many times in the past where someone would hold up or talk about a comic and Fraga could list all the creators and what happens in it off the top of his head. I like Fragas harebrained crazy comics and was really looking forward to Black Flag. I was really pulling for him, but the handling of the Black Flag campaign has really turned me away from him.

LOL, I get that shock/gore films are a niche not a lot of people are familiar with, but had people not even looked at their filmography?
If you watched the latest RedLetterMedia, they even show up in one of Danzig's movies.

But, anyway, I too am very outraged by this. To (Trashcast) infinity and beyond!

In fact, the paypigs should make EVS review American Mary!

Concur that Dan Fraga is by some major fucking distance the worst of all the ‘major’ CG names wrt late campaign and appalling lack of updates.

‘You will get the comic this year’… fuck off, Dan.

Way, WAY back in early 2020 I saw him on Az-holes channel for a live chat (long before Az fell out with CG) and when I learned of Black Flag I was really, really close to backing that campaign - thank God I didn’t. I reckon his prolonged absence from CG Kings is more to do with him ducking his backers than anything else. What a fucking fraud.

The only CGer who I would think of backing is Shane Davis. Say what you like about him but the art is good and the work ethic is there.

I as well. These RipPerverts have gone beyond the pale here.

Truly the Rippaverse has fallen far from the standard of conduct Comicsgaters have set, indeed they have strayed from the light of God. Yay, children of Rippa, rebuke the allure the Soska Sisters, renounce the siren song of artfag films and puke play and return to the fold of CG. Walk once more upon the true path of owning the SJWs and rejoin the congregation of the righteous, finding your place once more gooning for hours to some japanese OVA women making uwu noises as they show off their tentacle dildo collection while a retard make a 'ba-ba-baaayam' noise with his soundboard as you superchat couch cushion money for a brief hit of dopamine, like God intended. Amen.

Most of Doug's day to day is churning out clickbait political reaction on his locals. He was trying to do that on youtube for the last several years, but his channels kept getting nuked.

When one is as hideously un-photogenic as Doug TenNapel, it really isn’t wise to plaster your face all over the video thumbnails. It has the same traumatising effect upon the viewer as that of finding a turd in a fruit bowl.

Does anyone know why [Shane’s] arm is in a cast? Is it his drawing arm?
It’s his drawing arm. Detached bicep apparently and he needed the surgery or was risking permanent damage.

Edit - I can’t recall how he did it; not sure if it was a kickboxing/training injury. I am amazed tiger mom wife Yanzi allows him to risk his drawing livelihood by punching gormless Carolina goons on their substantially thick heads.

But Doug is a social media algorithm genius (according to Smiller). He's had his channel nuked a bunch of times, he makes a new one and shits out multiple videos at once and it works out every time for him (again according to Smiller).

If the last few years have shown anything, it's that Yanzi is really bad at tard wrangling. Unlike EVS and Malin, I actually like Shane's art, but the guy has major Former Fat Guy Syndrome and a terminal case of Yellow Fever, a deadly combo when alcohol is introduced.

He always looks like he's one bad stream away from fucking up everything.

His more recent strategy for staying on youtube was doing videos on channels that in theory belong to his children rather than him. I think he also uses email addresses and various other social media to keep the faithful aware of where the content has moved to now.

He isn't an algorithm genius by any means. Though Doug is convinced that he is one. He broke through during the 2020 election aftermath to a mass audience and fed that mass audience all the election-related crazy talk they could consume. It was never really driven much by the YT algorithm. He doesn't tend to get new viewers so much as he is shoveling the same shit to the same Qanon/Trump viewers.

I forgot I promised headsketch pics when I was out of town last week. To be honest they aren't as bad as I remember although Cyberfrog's teeth or mandibles or whatever they are are a bit sloppy and Salamandroid looks like he has a saggy stroke-face in one. All are zoomable.

Ignore the grey shadows on the left-hand side of the CF and Sal sketches, those are camera flash reflections from the embossed mirror-like cover material that I didn't notice until after taking them.

During the height of the COVID lockdowns totally by chance I saw a CGC announcement that all the conventions they were supposed to go to for on-site grading services were cancelled so they were offering special convention-pricing for all shipped submissions. I don't remember the details but want to say it was a flat $60 or so? When I saw the announcement I remembered an old EVS Spiderman convention sketch cover that had been listed on eBay as a Buy-It-Now for as long as I'd been following CG so I made a low-ball $20 offer and the guy took it. The day it arrived I immediately sent it to CGC for their special and made it in like the day before the cut-off (June 2020 maybe?) It goes without saying that this was all done on a whim and I knew nothing about comics grading. Turns out CGC will only authenticate and grade a sketch cover if it's drawn in the presence of CGC or at the same con that it's graded at. Otherwise they automatically give it the green label 8.0 with the qualified note. I wasn't into it for much so no big deal, it's still pretty cool.

On another note, since re-visiting CG (and this thread) in the last few weeks, it really does have the feel of a terminally ill movement to me. Sure, EVS is getting more superchats than ever and sorting his live YT vids by popularity, some of the recent Trashcasts are near the top. On that note, I see EVS has privated Trashcasts 1-9 at the time of writing (for members?)

Hark back to the pandemic glory years for CG. As EVS pointed out recently, his £1m plus campaigns rode high on a literally captive audience of shut-ins; a number of decent names in association (Nolan, Tucci, Keown, Lopresti, Fraga and later Davis); promo from the budding grifters of FNT and an enthusiastic message of ‘serving the fans’ what the big 2 seemingly refused to do.

Fast forward 4 years, and you can see why the evil project manager suits are needed in comics to reign in the batshit creatives. A total mess and complete collapse in ideals. Scant few decent campaigns and even fewer timely fulfillments (Nolan, Davis, and…?) Endless bullshit, e-drama, fly-by-night flavours of the month and worst if all, in EVS they backed a de facto leader whose narcissism and naive judgement of character have led to what could have been a promising movement into a septic tank filled to the brim with faeces like Mandy Summers, Wenger and Narwhal’s ‘499’.

I often wonder what guys like Nolan and Tucci really think of all this. Even these fellas must be utterly sick of EVS by now. Someone a few pages ago said the money isn’t there to sustain multiple £100k+ campaigns and this really is apparent. EVS manoeuvred himself to the top of the cash pyramid; maybe the PTP-backed exodus aren’t as dumb as billed and can also see that the money is drying up - what’s left is being leeched by EVS’ paypigs ever-more rapidly.

As Davis’s Japanese Whorecast recently signalled to us onlookers, last days of Rome are extremely fucking nigh for CG, Caesar.
