At least today's children will be spared the trauma of the VCR chewing up your favourite tape and your parents saying, "oh well, watch something else", and knowing the chances of having that beloved tape replaced are slim to none.
Or getting your ass whooped cause it belonged to Blockbuster. Knowing they have to pay for it.

All this video shop reminiscing is depressing the shit out of me.

There was a local to my City chain growing up like 10 stores and they where really good - the family that owned the chain owned some other shops as well like Corner Shops, a Take away or two and one or two others I just looked them up and apparently they are closing there last shop of any type in a few months - that sucks because it was all family owned an they where nice people like if you where a kid an your folks where renting a film for you / family night they threw in some sweets and mini cokes for free.

It's depressing that little family things like that can struggle on and just die when some Zombie brands that where becoming zombies in my teens are still shuffling on today.

We used to stuff all the tape back into the cassette then return it in the after hours slot. I can't remember ever getting fined over it.

It's probably more effort than it was ever worth for them. It's like them taking you to court over a non returned n64 game.

No child today would have the memory of rewinding a cassette or VHS, I was one of the last born to do so.
Once I rewound or fast-forwarded a cassette tape and the tape snapped off the reel.

The "8 bit pixel art"
There's a difference between 8-bit game graphics (~2 to 16-ish colors) and 16-bit game graphics (~256-ish colors).

Pixelated look of both comes from resolution being limited to ~200p. Designers weren't trying to make "pixel art".

I ended up having to pay something like 80 bucks because Blockbuster kept insisting my friend never returned Rainbow Six on my account even though all evidence suggested he did.

Jokes on you. They are still being used
Only in very specific situations, like old airplanes or computers that are still used. Not by mainstream public anymore. Good luck finding one in retail.

A weird thing for me, personally, is that kids today have access to more entertainment than possibly any other generation of humans in history, but none of them appear to have actually seen any films or TV shows.

I can't tell you how many times I've referenced something and got laughs or wry smiles or nods of recognition from everyone else in the room, only to receive confused, stony silence from the zoomer demographic. And these are not necessarily obscure things, either. These are things you would at least have heard of.

Like, how have you never seen Robocop? Or any of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies? I swear, I met one kid who had never seen the original Jurassic Park, which baffled me because they put that fucking film on TV literally every Christmas. That's a movie you can see just by being alive.

.......did you try to delete them?

IIRC, it happened on a break when I was back at home visiting and I was several timezones away when it was happening.

Which does lend credence to your argument that it could've just been ignored.

But it was an 80$ investment in allaying the fears of uptight parents that I'd done wrong.
