I mean, the short, concise answer is "I wanted it for Russia, so I took it". The "why did you want it" was never going to be simple unless you're just grabbing a particular resource.

Even if Current Year tries to apologize for it, that's what America did in the 1800s and there was nothing inherently wrong with it because the rule of the world is generally "annex or be annexed", either until you have diminishing returns on expanding (Roman Empire at its peak ran into this problem) or you have bigger internal problems that prevent expansion and becomes a matter of holding onto what you have.

I consider it more that history is self-correcting, and in the information age it corrects faster. She was mask-off evil and the majority of Americans saw that.
