Indeed - and one that came about as a result of requests for aid from the four regions formerly part of the mudlands that chose, of their own free will [and in accordance with a vote of their people], to no longer be ruled by the illegitimate coup regime in Kiev which has been committing atrocities against them for the better part of the last decade.

Not really. Kaliningrad, Vladivostok and Vyborg changed owners under peace treaties. As did Crimea.

“Ukraine” is a much more muddled case where it can be argued that the agreements that gave birth to the state were first and foremost of a National nature (the USSR), and secondly, are null and void since Ukraine broke the constitution that was part of its founding.

Btw: For an example of how this is as much a Russo-Soviet civil war as opposed to a war between two independent states, look at Syrski (the newly appointed commander in chief) who was born in Moscow and still has his parents and relatives in Russia. His adoptive son has been at pro Russian rallies in Australia flying the flag of the Lugansk People’s Republic.

When the Russians say that Ukraine is a “brotherly nation”, they’re not lying.

EDIT: Kaliningrad being German is really a can of worms that Europe doesn’t want to open, since big parts of Poland are also formerly German.

He is very fortunate that his commander only stole his pay. He was treated well. Just as if he was a local boy. A better commander would have also extorted any money he or his extended family had in Australia.

Confiscating pay or taking a cut of pay would be completely normal in Ukraine. So would ghost soldiers in units, people paying for every job or rank away from defending a frontline trench. Stealing food. Selling off equipment. The commander himself would also inevitably be expected to be making donations up the ranks.

He also deserves praise as a very active commander in personally threatening to break his legs. Usually they just make it clear that you either hand over the money or you will be given a task which will inevitably lead to death.
